Does anyone else look really awful on FaceTime?

I have been video calling family and friends and look horrendous. All my features look bigger and distorted Confused. Everyone else on the call looks normal.

Do I look like that in real life?

I am ashamed to admit I force my friends who have seen me in every state imaginable to do these calls over Instagram so I can have a stupid filter and concentrate on catching up instead of how horrific I look! BlushGrin

Bumfuzzled · 18/04/2020 21:26

It makes my neck look like I have a turkey wattle Hmm in real life I honestly don’t (believe you me I’ve checked for it 8 zillion times in the last month from all angles).

My friend reckons it’s like looking into the future. Horrifying!

MabelChiltern1 · 18/04/2020 21:29

Have a big zoom meeting on Monday... I not only look dreadful but sound awful too ... heeeelllllpppppp!

JaceLancs · 18/04/2020 21:29

I’ve found that putting my phone at a greater distance with light behind me works best
Most of my work conference calls have been sat in garden next to water feature with phone propped up near by
I’m enjoying it as best as I can

TheLadyAnneNeville · 18/04/2020 21:30

Dreadful.

RedRed9 · 18/04/2020 21:35

There was a thing about this a while ago: helpfully I can’t remember much of it.

Basically we find ourselves unfamiliar/repulsive in photos/videos because we predominantly see ourselves in a mirror which is in the reverse. So when we see ourselves the ‘right’ way round it has a touch of the uncanny valley to us.

No idea why WhatsApp/Zoom in particular makes us look shit though!

RedRed9 · 18/04/2020 21:38

Light behind you makes it really difficult for everyone else on the call to see you. (Is that why you like it?) I’m so fed up of seeing dark shadowy outlines of people sat in front of sunny white windows. I can’t see you when you do that!!

SmileyClare · 18/04/2020 21:45

Glad someone has mentioned this. I hate facetiming and actually find the horror of my huge bulbous forehead distracts me from the call. I'm now debating a fringe based purely on my realisation I'm ugly thanks to face time.

Will try the tips mentioned on here, namely troweling on theatrical make up, sitting in the dark and my favourite tip; putting your phone at the other end of the garden and shouting Grin

Wewearpinkonwednesdays · 18/04/2020 21:48

Yup. I'm actually half decent looking aswell but facetime does me no favours, and I'm certainly not one for taking selfies but I've done it a couple of times with the kids by flipping the camera, and may face tooks completely wrong, all lopsided Confused maybe that's just what my face actually looks like!

Samtsirch · 18/04/2020 21:49

Yes, my face looks like a full moon.
Complete with craters.

Pinkarsedfly · 18/04/2020 21:50

Yeah. All the chins, all the time.

Awful.

Mascotte · 18/04/2020 21:50

Yes! Hideous! I don’t do it because of this

RedRed9 · 18/04/2020 21:50

😂

twatbags · 18/04/2020 21:52

My lot have been doing house party... I'm one ugly cow! I'm 42 and haven't has any aesthetics but once this lockdown is over I'm getting my dodgy eye sorted , I look like I've got a slow wink 😉

blueskys72 · 18/04/2020 21:52

Face, not so bad ... my NECK is just worse than awful! I have a big crease that you can see from space!!

blueskys72 · 18/04/2020 21:54

Said crease ...

MarshaBradyo · 18/04/2020 21:55

It’s not the best I walk around trying to face half decent full light. Doesn’t work.

No quite as bad as the phone flip as you look down but close.

Ticklemeelmo · 18/04/2020 21:55

Yes 😫

In my defence, I haven't had a full night's sleep in 3 months (new baby)- I can convince myself I look ok in real life but Zoom chats show me otherwise. I look so tired and drawn.

EggysMom · 18/04/2020 21:58

Raise the screen/camera - one of the mistakes made is that people hold the device too low, so that it is angled upwards and catches all of their chins. I think it's because we are used to looking down to read our devices.

I must try the suggestion of a soft light between me and the camera, see if that also helps.

MrsTerryPratchett · 18/04/2020 22:00

My friend from work and I were involved in a group chat on FaceZoomSkype and the entire time we were talking in a mature erudite way about important matters. Also frantically texting each other about our awful necks and how all the 20 year olds could happily chat while NOT surreptitiously covering their necks. Bastards.

DICarter1 · 18/04/2020 22:00

Yes, yes, yes. I look all forehead and nose. It’s scary. I didn’t realise I might actually look like this in real life. Might end up wearing a face mask just to cover half my very unattractive face.

MarshaBradyo · 18/04/2020 22:02

Terry funny. I’m not at work atm but in an industry where everyone is young. You’re making me glad I don’t have to see my face in contrast to 26 year olds on the screen these days. Could ignore the fact at work.

winterisstillcoming · 18/04/2020 22:02

Zoom has a touch up function in settings.

Charley50 · 18/04/2020 22:09

Ive spent ages trying to find my best face in the best light for House Party. Some of my friends look annoyingly great; I look terrible. I'm now going for interesting, rather than attractive. Worst thing is when your face freezes for them. All I can think about is the horrific pose my face will be trapped in.

SmileyClare · 18/04/2020 22:09

MrsTP that's funny Grin
I find myself having sensible conversations with an internal dialogue of Shit what's happened to my neck, why is my forehead so large and will anyone notice if I suddenly shut the blind in here?

Glad it's not just me .
