Tips for boy growing out curly hair?

Hi, wondering if anyone has any tips or advice. My 8 year old wants to grow his hair out. He's now at 5 months with no haircut. The problem is his curly hair seems to grow up the way. Its long enough now for a fringe but just doesn't grow that way! When he washes it I brush it down the way and it looks good but as soon as its dry again its standing up right.

Are there any products to reduce the curl slightly or anything anyone would suggest to get his hair growing a little quicker?

Ds8 has recently grown his hair, no hair cut since last June. Luckily the messy stage didn’t seem to last long (definitely not as long as I was expecting) and he is through the other side and it looks lovely now. His hair isn’t curly though so I don’t have any style tips. Could he perhaps wear a funky bandana?

A funky bandana might be cool over summer. I'll have a look :)
