How to dye my hair pink

I have medium brown hair with plenty of grays, it's also longer than usual as I've not had a haircut for a few months. I've always fancied a pink streak or pink ends. Now that I am wfh, it's a perfect time to experiment.

Could anyone make some recommendations? Which dye? Do I need to bleach my hair first? Should I do the ends or a streak? Is this stupid idea? Thanks

I've got bright pink hair, balayage. It means it grows out without looking too shit Grin I got my hair bleached but it's dark brown, then whack Bleach London dye on top.

Go for it OP, if you hate it at least we're in lockdown!

I've just done mine. Had to bleach x 3 first as i wanted it super bright

first go was just the ends and lengths, second all over and then a third all over (disclaimer: I have done this before so was fully expecting the ginger and then light ginger stages before any blondeness appears, and you must not do roots first as the heat from head makes them 'take' quicker)

Then i used lime crime unicorn hair 'chocolate cherry' all over and left it on 2 hours. My DP let me do his beard too Grin

Brilliant- any suggestions for products to bleach with first?

I love yours @lubeybooby

There's another thread on S & B about shaving hair off. I know that's not what you want OP, but it seems the ideal time for many to experiment. However, I'm no expert and I've royally messed up many times myself, but with that sort of thing I think you're best off waiting to get it done professionally, unless of course you're prepared to shave it all off! Incidentally, I have long hankered after some kind of pink, a lightish pink, with a hint of purple iykwim.

Thank you, I'm really enjoying it cheering me up a treat.

I used nutrisse ultra blonde for my three goes which I believe is equivalent to bleach + 20% developer. 30% does it quicker but is more damaging

I spread the whole process over about 5 days as most dyes and bleaches need to be put on unwashed hair so your natural oils protect your scalp a little

It means living with ginger ends and dark roots and then kind of light gingeryness for a while but you don't need to get to platinum blonde for a true pink and/or bright dye, kind of strawberry blonde will do the trick.

I also watched a lot of this kind of thing before doing it

Directions is a good brand - try flamingo pink

I wanted to go platinum blonde a couple years ago and was too cheap to pay a salon £300+ to do it, so bleached it at home with just a box lightener. It did take a couple goes (spread out over a few weeks), but worked. When I then went to a salon for root maintenance she was really impressed I did it myself.

I go through spats of wanting it rose gold/pale pink but it never really takes. And I've tried a million different at home brands. Last weekend I tried Directions - but a mix of the pastel pink & flamingo pink. It fades pretty quickly, but I like it
