Has anybody highlighted their own hair?

I have mousy brown hair with a fair bit of grey at the front and have had blonde highlights for years. My roots are currently dreadful.

A few years ago when I was skint I bought some easy-mesh and but a few blonde highlights around the front and my parting. It was okay but not great.

I was looking online today at hair supplies thinking I might have another go, when I stumbled across a cap!! Does anyone remember those from years ago. Well after watching a couple of YT vids it looks fairly straightforward. Would I be mad to give it a go??

Yes, ex DH used to do mine with a cap a few years ago. He was quite good at it in the end. It looked ok to be fair, less is more though I found with the amount of strands you pull through and make sure you start from your parting

The Jerome Russel highlighting kit in maximum lightening work fantastic

Reallybadidea · 09/04/2020 17:28

I used the Jerome Russell highlighting kit last week. I think I should have done every other hole because it came out much lighter overall than I would usually have, plus it took forever to do all the hooking. A few bits came out slightly brassy, maybe I didn't leave it on quite long enough. I'd definitely use it again though

I use Jerome Russell frequently and am always really pleased with the results. MUCH cheaper than a hairdressers for very good results!

I have the JeromeB highlighting kit in the cupboard, just thinking about it. I'm just worried I may get white streaks. How do you monitor the colour?

Sojo88 · 10/04/2020 11:53

I just leave it on for most of the development time, and you can see the colour really brightening. I find it always goes a nice bright blonde, and all the dyed bits are the same there aren't some bits better than others. It dyes pretty evenly.

Is number 1 the maximum lightening one?

So it doesn’t matter if you’ve got really grown out hughlighhts? That’s my problem, 3inches of dark hair ... I might start another thread.

I bit the bullet and gave it a go. I gave myself some face framing highlights.ninitially I didn't leave the bleach on long enough, so I redid it and very happy. It looks sunkissed and has brightened my face. Just need to touch up my greys with a dark blonde then I'm done. Saved myself a small fortune.

Jerome Russell one great I did dd’s I didn’t use the maximum lightening but the other one and I did buy the toner which we did after washing the colour off and took the brassy tones out she normally has mid brown hair and this was finished effect

Yes I do the one with a cap occasionally when I can’t get to a hairdressers. I usually just do the parting and the front not a full head. Make sure the strands you pull through are fine/not too thick. There are several different brands, all much of a muchness.

bobstersmum · 10/04/2020 20:34

I also do my own with the maximum lightening kit. What I would say is don't rush, take your time to pull through as much as you are happy with, if you want more of an effect you can pull more through each hole. Leave on for the maximum time don't be tempted to rush. When I've rushed it's been brassy. It's great!
I also once used the kit to put some slices in with foils, was really tricky doing it myself but was good when done.
