So... has anyone braved a home blonde dye yet?!

If so... how did it go? I'm trying desperately to talk myself out of it!

Anyone had any success with home box blonde?

I have bleached my hair with box dyes for years now. I used to do hi lights with Wella box colour and I would attempt to bayalage by painting it on, but now I use Superdrug bleach blonde on my roots.
I am happy with it, but I have curly hair, so mistakes are not quite so noticeable!
I also cut my own hair using the unicorn technique.
All good, so far!😁

Makesure you patch test any products you use!

MrsBobDylan · 02/04/2020 23:59

I did a home dye last week. I had highlighted blonde hair and went for a Carmel blonde. It is a lot darker than my previous colour ( I would say it is a mid brown) but it has coloured the grey well and doesn't look too dreadful.

I will do it again and go for a lighter blonde.

sweetkitty · 03/04/2020 00:03

I dyed my hair for about 25 years using Nice n Easy I now have it done at the hairdressers was due to go tomorrow for my roots. Could be reaching for a home due soon though, my hairdresser won’t speak to me though!

Pics?

RubyViolet · 03/04/2020 00:03

Following..... have full head of highlights that are looking decidedly ropey. Also tempted to home dye. Ideas please !

Search for Brad Mondo on Facebook. He reacts to YouTube videos of ordinary people colouring and cutting their own hair. Not only are they very entertaining but he also explains what they are doing wrong and gives some useful tips Smile

SparklingGin · 03/04/2020 01:15

Hairdresser here please do a patch test first with any home colour so many people don’t and if you are allergic the results are dreadful

littlenamechanger · 03/04/2020 07:58

Ok... I'm going to take the plunge. Will get a box dye today and patch test, then dye on Sunday. At least if it goes horrifically wrong then no one will see me for a while. Or I can get a new hat for trips to the shop.

I’ve ordered josh wood root concealers. Can’t bring myself to destroy my nicely blended highlights (even if they are growing out) with a box colour. Let’s see if the concealers work!

TableNiner · 03/04/2020 09:02

I have used blonde streak highlighter kits in the past. I couldn’t find the one I normally use but think they are all quite similar. I find it quite forgiving but tend to leave on longer than it says to reduce potential orangeyness.

Daphine2004 · 03/04/2020 09:17

If you regularly go to a hairdressers for your colour and is not a one colour all over style, please wait it out! I’m not a hairdresser, but know how much it costs in time and money to achieve my hair style (balayage creative colour) and whilst my roots aren’t bad because of the style, my greys are awful. I wouldn’t be happy with a box dye as it won’t achieve how I have my hair and I know it’ll potentially change how the colour comes or when I do get it done - potentially more processing too!

FYI: I have incredibly dark hair and always had caramel/blonde tones in and have been working towards a much lighter look overall.

Spaceprincess · 03/04/2020 11:05

I'm all over white blonde, do my roots about every 6 weeks with £4.50 Platinum Live XL, tone it with silver shampoo and the occasional Wella white lady toner. People are always surprised/horrified when I tell them I do it myself.

Ffsseriously · 03/04/2020 11:43

Heard a hairdresser on the radio saying the problem with using a box dye Is after lockdown the hairdresser cant just dye over it, it will need to be removed which can be damaging to hair, and costly.

MorrisZapp · 03/04/2020 12:09

Doesn't blonde dye have to be mixed? If it's mixed then how can you patch or strand test then wait?

HarrietThePi · 03/04/2020 13:10

Morris I've always wondered that. Have bleached and dyed my hair at home for years but have never done a patch test. Partly because I'm impatient but also because the instructions say that once you open and mix the ingredients you should use them right away and not store any remainding mixture. I suppose people either buy a box just for a patch test or it's actually fine to leave the mixed product out for 24 hours. Confused

Op I'd recommend watching a few YouTube videos before your first attempt. Also doesn't hurt to do a deep conditioning treatment a couple of days before you bleach it. It doesn't have to come out as one block colour either if you don't want it to.

FthisS · 03/04/2020 13:14

I started doing it around 6 months ago after my hairdresser started to not listen to what I wanted. I use a bleach london bleach and tone with bleach london champagne super toner.

Bezalelle · 03/04/2020 13:31

Does anyone actually patch test??

lpchill · 03/04/2020 13:53

Only ever had my hair bleached twice at hairdressers. Always done it at home. Use the Jerome ones you get as separate gold bottle and boxed sachets in boots or Asda (bulk brought online a while ago) normally just bleach the whole lot and use fudge purple shampoo once a week. Trying out balayage after a stint of going brown as didn't want to constantly bleach it which has turned out quite nice still purple shampoo once a week.

sleepwhenidie · 03/04/2020 13:58

I was about to start a thread on this very subject. Grin

@stealthbanana please update on the root touch up when you've done it!

HarrietThePi · 03/04/2020 18:34

I don't know if savers are still operating at the moment but they usually have the Jerome Russel ones that lpchill mentioned. Those are what I use usually.

SparklingGin · 04/04/2020 01:03

I am a hairdresser we can apply salon tint over a box tint the only slight issue is there may be a slight variation on your normal salon colour when you have used a box dye at home most hairdressers can get it fairly close.

ArriettyJones · 04/04/2020 01:06

DD has a home balayage kit she is keen to try on me. (She panic bought toiletries like a whirlwind.) The idea being to blend everything a bit. Not sure whether it’s a threat or a promise TBH Grin

Ffsseriously · 04/04/2020 01:25

@SparklingGin see the hairdresser on the radio said it was really difficult Hmm

SparklingGin · 04/04/2020 01:28

No it really isn’t difficult box tints are made to a different formula so you can get a slight variation in colour, we regularly get clients in who have used box colours for years and it’s never a problem tinting their hair.

SeaToSki · 04/04/2020 01:48

I texted my hairdresser and she sent me links to a product and colour that she thought would work well and be the least tricky to fix if I bollocksed it up. Now just waiting for them to arrive in the post.
