So... has anyone braved a home blonde dye yet?!

If so... how did it go? I'm trying desperately to talk myself out of it!

Anyone had any success with home box blonde?

My hair dresser advised me if I really have to just do the roots and regrowth I can see.

(Full head highlights/lowlights and lots of grey in my regrowth!)

Still working every day so reluctant to let the grey come through.
Have a root concealer spray and a box dye stashed.

sleepwhenidie · 04/04/2020 07:50

@skitosea what product? Smile

andratuttobene · 04/04/2020 09:12

If anyone has an answer to the patch test vs needing to use the colour straightaway issue please let us know!

AStarSoBright · 04/04/2020 09:30

You just use a small amount of the colour creme and developer, mix them together and do the patch test. You don't mix the whole thing.

leolion81 · 04/04/2020 10:07

I have full head highlights and used a box blonde on my roots. Blended in very well however it's not blonde enough and orangey so will do again in a couple of weeks. I don't think it's possible to get a blonde like you get at the hairdressers with one go with a box dye. I've also cut my own hair using the front ponytail method and seriously considering doing my own cut/ colour from now on as I hate going to the hairdresser! But I will see how it turns out after my next dye.

leolion81 · 04/04/2020 10:08

Oh and I always patch test, it's not always possible to mix just a small amount as with the one I just used you pour one bottle into another so have to mix it all in one go. Used it 24 hours later with no problems

BerryCatHolly · 04/04/2020 11:32

Always done it at home. Use the Jerome ones you get as separate gold bottle and boxed sachets in boots or Asda

Same. Have used Jerome Russell highlighting kit at home for years. No orange as long as you leave it on long enough. Just pull small strands through the cap so you don’t get stripey hair. Sometimes I tone after with redken shades eq which is a Demi toner, to get more ash.

It never makes sense to me when people say they dye their hair blonde? Lifting the hair colour can only be achieved by bleach. The tone is changed by applying a dye / toner over the top. Avoid permanent dye for this as it changes the hair structure and is harder to deal with next time you want to bleach your hair (causes more damage).

Look at lisalovesbayage on insta if you want to learn more science behind bleaching and toning your hair.

Gwenhwyfar · 04/04/2020 14:04

I've looked up Brad Mondo and think his hair looks awful.

maddy68 · 04/04/2020 14:06

I always dye my own. It's easy and it looks great I like the nice n easy as it's more multi tonal

Gwenhwyfar · 04/04/2020 14:30

I have naturally mousy brown hair that is dyed red. How could I dye my hair a strawberry or caramel blond at home?

stairway · 04/04/2020 14:38

Dyed my hair blond myself for 15 years I think it looks better than when the hairdresser did it. I use a nice and easy one usually. It does depend on how dark your hair is. My hair is medium brown and it will go dark blond with nice and easy. You have to part the sections and not forget areas like the temples and the back of the head.

Gwenhwyfar · 04/04/2020 18:01

My natural hair is medium brown as well so sounds like I can use Nice and Easy without having to do a separate bleach.
I did an online search and many box dyes seem to be out of stock. Looks like I'll have to buy clips as well - I only have one and will need 4 won't I?

stairway · 04/04/2020 18:18

Gwenhwyfar the box has a guide at the back which will show you the colour depending on your natural hair colour. Only some of their shades work on medium brown hair and you get a dark blond rather than a Hollie willoughbie peroxide look.

Gwenhwyfar · 04/04/2020 18:38

Thanks

AgnesNaismith · 04/04/2020 18:52

I have some beautiful and v expensive highlights which were due to be refreshed just before lockdown.....so now I have a significant amount of regrowth with greys.

I have bought a dark semi-permanent dye and going to attempt an at home root stretch/smudge if just to cover up the grey.

If anyone thinks this is ridiculous please talk me out of it.

ILikeyourHairyHands · 05/04/2020 08:06

I don't dye my hair, anymore however, if you've got expensive highlights and complicated dye-jobs, don't do it! Just wait it out, it won't kill you and you won't be crying salty tears of regret when you fuck your hair up. Just wack it up and forget about it for a few weeks. If you completely bollox your hair it will take years to sort it out.

Coffeepot72 · 05/04/2020 08:14

@AgnesNaismith please don’t do it! Buy some powder or touch up paste to keep you going!

runningtogetskinny · 05/04/2020 08:17

If it's just a few greys along the parting Nice and Easy do a root touch up kit, I've used it regularly between hairdresser appointments. It's especially good of you have balayage or hi lights under the top layers as you don't need to get any dye on the lighter parts

Silverstreaks · 05/04/2020 09:03

I really don't know why people can be so fearful of dyeing or bleaching at home. It really is simple and the products available are amazing. You definitely need good technique to get the best results but YouTube is the answer to that.
Do your research, be honest about your hair condition and the colour you are and want to achieve and go for it.
Brad Mondo is lovely. He popped up on my feed and is a little slice of entertainment.

EllaAlright · 05/04/2020 09:06

I’m really light bleached blonde. I’m going the other way and am dying it dark! Using esalon though, my colour advisor there has opted for a light copper Brown, so we will see. Waiting for it to arrive as we speak.

Coffeepot72 · 05/04/2020 17:15

Hope it goes well @EllaAlright and please keep us posted? I have been messaging my hair dresser, she recommended the Wella Colour Fresh range for my blonde highlights, lasts about 10 washes. And I have ordered the Color Wow powder to keep on top of my roots. Hopefully.

HarrietThePi · 05/04/2020 19:31

I always bleach mine at home but don't have any of that blue powder left. I only have the creme you're supposed to mix it with. My roots look dreadful. I've found a bottle of sun in in the cupboard that dp used to use. I don't really know what it does but have just sprayed my roots with it. Hopefully they'll lighten a bit and look less obvious.

stealthbanana · 17/04/2020 12:51

@sleepwhenidie the Josh wood stuff has finally arrived! I can report back as follows

  • the root marker is great but not really designed for all of your roots - it’s much more a grey cover up - far too time consuming to do a whole scalp
  • the darker blonde blending brush is fantastic but too dark for me (it’s darker than my roots) and they don’t seem to have it in lighter blonde which is a shame
  • the tinted dry shampoo in lighter blonde is an absolute WINNER for zoom calls. It’s a bit sticky on the hair but totally covers my roots and is ofc non permanent. So may just spray a bit of that on every day 😂

Have now ordered a josh wood semi permanent shot gloss to see if that will just lift my roots slightly. Also looking at the wella fresh toner.

sleepwhenidie · 17/04/2020 13:59

Thank you stealth!

wink1970 · 17/04/2020 14:21

I'm thinking of attacking mine a different way - either going pink/blue for a bit (why not, probably the only time I will ever have an excuse) or going back to dark - the trouble with the latter being I have a lot of greys, it turns out!

anyone gone pastel instead?
