So... has anyone braved a home blonde dye yet?!

If so... how did it go? I'm trying desperately to talk myself out of it!

Anyone had any success with home box blonde?

I just topped up my highlights with a Wella kit from Amazon. All in all, not too bad. I need a toner treatment though because my hair was looking brassy before this (even with purple shampoo), so have ordered L'Oreal Dialights + activater for a DIY job.

FloconDeNeige · 17/04/2020 15:25

I always use a L’oreal box and it lightens to very light blonde without brassy-ness. My hair is dark blonde to begin with though, so it’s not a radical change.

What is your natural colour OP?

squishedgrapes · 17/04/2020 16:48

I'm very tempted to bleach the ends of my hair and dye it green.
I'm hoping it passes.
My daughter is horrified

squishedgrapes · 17/04/2020 16:49

But if I do just the end two inches, it'll eventually grow out, or I could just have it cut out.

Lovebug06 · 18/04/2020 20:16

Had anyone used the Holly Willoughby light blonde dye she apparently uses /promotes? I always wonder if it really does it blonde like hers or if she does actually have it done properly.... All blonde box dyes seem to turn your hair orangey that I've seen and tried, although the ones I did on myself was a few years ago.

SmileyClare · 18/04/2020 20:39

I've been box blonde for years so here are my tips;
Only a permanent dye will lighten and cover greys.

-You won't get the same shade as the picture on the front. It depends entirely on your base colour. The guide on the back is a better guide. If you have very dark roots, you need a high lift blonde. Look for one's that will lift by 5 shades or more.

  • to avoid ginger or orange tones, go for the lightest shade. Choose a blonde that is neutral or cool (e.g. beige, ash, cool blonde) avoid warm shades (e.g. caramel, honey warm blonde)
  • Do a strand test. Decant a tiny amount from both bottles onto a saucer or something and mix. Apply to an inconspicuous section of hair. Keep checking on the development. Most dyes advise leaving for around 40-45 mins. The longer you leave it, the lighter it will be. Note the exact time you left it on.

-If you only need roots doing then don't apply to the lengths and ends. This is likely to damage already bleached hair.

-To get a professional result, you'll need a purple toner or toning shampoo to use afterwards. You can use this regularly to avoid brassiness.

Good luck everyone. I've had more own fair share of disasters, that moment when you take the towel of your hair, look in the bathroom mirror and think Fuuuuck Grin so hopefully I can give you the benefit of my experience after years of trial and error.

@Lovebug06

Yes I’ve used it in the past and for me it’s pretty close (although my hair is a bit lighter than Holly’s). It won’t work if your natural colour is darker than dark blonde; not without a pre-lightener first anyway.

DrMaryMalone · 18/04/2020 22:53

I’ve got a half head of highlights that was last done before Christmas and I had taken the decision in January to grow them out. So twice now I have covered my grey roots with a medium brown root touch up dye and blended it down to get a root smudge effect. The greys are coming through again now so I’ve the all over dye in the same shade and I’ll do the whole lot except some fine bits of the blonde around my face. Did consider bigger secretions seeing as chunky hi lights a la JLo are in and so are tigers at the moment!

Redwinestillfine · 18/04/2020 22:58

Go lighter than you think. I tried a 'light blonde' and it's more brown.

stealthbanana · 29/06/2020 10:34

Coming back to this thread to say I tried the Josh wood shot gloss in champagne blonde and it’s been an absolute winner - has just lifted my roots so that you don’t see the highlight line in such stark contrast and made my whole hair lovely and soft. Highly recommend!

I have my long awaited hair appointment in a couple of weeks but will definitely use this to lengthen the gaps between appointments going forward

woodhill · 29/06/2020 10:39

I think Demi permanent will cover some grey?

mrssmiling · 29/06/2020 11:43

Another vote for Josh Wood Shade Shot Gloss (semi- permanent treatment gloss) and I used Champagne Blonde too. I’m naturally brownish blonde with half a head of blonde highlights - this covered the grey and lifted the colour after the weeks of lockdown...a warm, flattering blonde and it conditions very well. I am not very grey, but it really did a brilliant job of covering the silver strands! £15 in Boots and well worth it! You use half a tube for long hair and a quarter for short to medium hair. As Stealth says, perfect for lengthening gaps between colour appointments. Smells lovely too - no chemical smell.

Hair in lockdown - one of the subjects covered in this little lockdown comedy.
