Is anyone cutting their own hair during lockdown?

And if so what is the best approach. I normally have shoulder length slightly layered hair. I have seen the ponytail at the front of the head approach on YouTube. Very grateful for any tips from folk that have cut their own hair. I do have a proper scissors.

Luckily got my hair cut a week before lock down. If it gets bad. I'll probably do the pony tail cut, it's worked out Orishas for me before

Chochito · 03/04/2020 23:31

@briebuiltthiscity (Great username, btw). Oh dear. Must have been a massive snip. Maybe you can get extensions when hairdressers re-open. I bet you were gutted.

justtakeatowel · 04/04/2020 00:42

With all those saying it hasn't been long I was due a cut last week which was obviously cancelled and my hairdresser was self isolating with symptoms for 2 weeks before. I go 8 weeks between cuts and have colour every 16 weeks. This was my colour!

I'm starting to get a bit of a mullet but desperately trying to grow out my layers so am hoping that it's positive and without all the cutting they will grow!

jewel1968 · 04/04/2020 09:35

I still haven't done it. I know I am a coward!

I always cut it myself anyway, so technically yes. Wouldn't do the so called mumsnet haircut though, too much margin for error.

It depends what you're aiming to achieve really OP, as it's about technique.

jewel1968 · 04/04/2020 14:35

Just a tidy up really. The longer it get the more scraggly it looks. I have fine wavy hair. I could get DP to cut it in a straight line

I normally keep my hair very short and it was overdue a cut when I caught Covid-19.

One by one all the hairdressers closed down for the duration and now my hair is wavy, floppy and my roots are showing.

I have no styling products. I don't even have a hairdryer.

I'll need a hairband by the time the hairdressers open again.

Gingernaut · 04/04/2020 19:07

Or a paper bag.

I tried a No. 6 clip, but I've massacred the front.

briebuiltthiscity · 04/04/2020 22:34

@Chochito when I said “your paying for extensions” he was like “yes of course”. To be fair it needed a good cut. But not quite this much.. if it would put me I’d post pics but I’ve shared them already on social media etc.

Yogawoogie · 05/04/2020 11:00

@Judystilldreamsofhorses I love your hair! You’re so stylish!

I’ve ordered proper scissors and hair dye.

That looks nice RUSU92

shinynewapple2020 · 07/04/2020 08:20

I have my hair done every 4 weeks to keep my grey roots covered and my fringe just on my eye brows. Was due a cut the week before lock down when things started shutting and social distancing started.

At some point I will need to attempt a home dye and at least cut my fringe. I can let the rest grow down and tie back if it gets annoying.

StCharlotte · 07/04/2020 11:31

Msny years ago my friend admired my DIY cut and asked me do hers (a simple bob). I thought I was being clever and pulled her hair down, snipped it, let it go and it pinged right back up to her hairline. Luckily she was fine with it but I'll never forget that sinking feeling!

and 40 years on my sister and I still never speak of the time I cut both her daughters' hair, including the first cut in one case

TeaAddict235 · 08/04/2020 14:03

That haircut is hideous @Callybrid . It suited that time of 1998 but it was and still is hideous.

BambooWhoosh · 08/04/2020 20:25

Can anyone recommend some budget hairdressing scissors please? Just for my fringe, so I guess I don't need big scissors! (definitely UK & mail order). Thanks.

Alwayscheerful · 08/04/2020 21:44

Can anyone recommend a reasonable pair of scissors for fairly thick mid length hair please?

ThanksForAllTheFish · 09/04/2020 05:28

I chopped my hair the other day. It was somewhere between waist length and bum length but really needed the ends off. Cut it to bra strap length and it looks and feels much better. It’s still long by hair standards but to me it feels really short now.
I done the 4 section rubber band thing (done this a few times in the past so have the hang of it now).

I’m seriously tempted to cut a fringe again. I used to have one of those really short baby fringes and I loved it. Not sure if it’s something I should try to do on my own though.

Oblomov20 · 09/04/2020 07:16

I just don't get it. Struggling to understand. How bad can your hair get in 4 weeks. Most people who are regulars, only have it cut every 6 weeks or so.

Oblomov20 · 09/04/2020 07:31

Mind you, I'd had my 6 week haircut the day before this all started, and my occasional highlights done the week before, so I'm still looking glam. ish.

Dh and Ds1 and Ds2, I pulled the clippers out of the back of the cupboard at the weekend, and gave them all a grade 4 to 8, so 1/2 and inch to an inch. They all look very neat and tidy.

Oblomov20 · 09/04/2020 07:34

Why people cut hair, if they don't know what they are doing, I'll never know!

PLEASE DON'T

It'll wait. Till you can get to a hairdressers. I promise!

ditavonteesed · 09/04/2020 07:47

I did, I buzz cut my shoulder length curly hair. Won't need to go to the hairdressers for a while now 😂

ScrapThatThen · 09/04/2020 07:49

I think although it seems soon, every 6 weeks means some people now haven't been for 9 weeks (more if early self isolators), and some people go more often. I postponed a haircut and my roots are not glamorous at all now (and I might have a Skype job interview 🤔).

ScrapThatThen · 09/04/2020 07:50

Do you like it dita? I'm eyeing up clippers to go grey.

vjg13 · 09/04/2020 09:51

I've done the twist into sections and cut off the split ends on myself and one daughter. I quite like searching for split ends and chopping them off!

I forgot to say that I usually cut my own hair anyway these days. Hairdressers always take off too much and I hate the way they style it afterwards. I don’t think I’ve had my hair cut by a hairdresser in 5/6 years. I do take DD (10) as she likes her hair in a short style and it’s too much for me to do.
