And if so what is the best approach. I normally have shoulder length slightly layered hair. I have seen the ponytail at the front of the head approach on YouTube. Very grateful for any tips from folk that have cut their own hair. I do have a proper scissors.

I have cut and coloured my own hair for years Grin

lindyloo57 · 31/03/2020 16:33

It's only been a week, I was do to go today, for highlights, I trim my own hair, have done for two years, you can go and look on youtube, lots of people demonstrating how, hairdressers and non hairdressers, it's the highlights I will struggle with, did buy the wella highlighter kit, just got to pluck up the courage to do it, it's funny when I was younger I did use the kit all the time, as I have got older, 60 in August I

yoga if you are a few weeks ahead of me, perhaps you can give me some tips...!

Bezalelle · 31/03/2020 17:58

I like a nice blunt cut on my shoulder length hair. I part it and make two low bunches under my ears. Then I bring the ends together under my chin and cut straight across.

I’ve had a pixie cut for years and had intended this to be the year I’d try growing it out. Just hadn’t meant to start doing it this way!

RUSU92 · 31/03/2020 20:03

I was thinking about buzz cutting it while I’m stuck at home and letting it grow out grey (I usually dye it black). Having read this thread today I popped upstairs and tried the MN haircut for the first time. My hair is a long bob, with a long side swept fringe, and now has some lovely layers so it looks thicker when curly. I’ll try it straight tomorrow and maybe post a pic if it looks alright Grin

Yogawoogie · 31/03/2020 20:57

@Judystilldreamsofhorses don’t do what I did is my tip Grin Luckily it’s still slightly longer than I would usually have it. I only took a little off but it’s more ‘wispy’ than normal because I was afraid that if I tried to get the usual bluntness I would mess up!

ReginaGeorgeous · 31/03/2020 21:35

No. I have mine cut and coloured every five weeks at the salon and my appointment was due at the end of this week. I’m just going to leave it until I can get back to my hairdresser.

jewel1968 · 31/03/2020 21:41

I always put off cutting my hair until I absolutely have to cut it. And now I find myself in isolation with hair that deffo needs a trim. It is looking very much in need of a cut. Not quite brave enough yet.....

yoga this is mine now (I left my eyebrows in so you can see how short it usually is) almost three weeks after the last cut. As the voice of experience, would I be better just leaving it alone? It grows REALLY fast.

Would love to cut my hair as it so thick was due to have it cut tomorrow as well anyway I’ve brought my hair dye just need some one to help me

RUSU92 · 01/04/2020 12:32

Right - Mumsnet haircut pics attached! Heart one is without straighteners. Others are with.

I do quite like it now it’s straightened. I gave the fringe a trim too, as the ponytail cutting method gave me a definite fringe but it was too long to leave in my eyes, but not long enough to sweep properly as the heart pic shows.

Only problem now is that as a peri menopausal woman in lockdown, I’m going to want to tie it back as I usually do when I get hot and bothered, and much of this hair won’t go back! I’ll have clips and little mini bunches all over my head Grin

Layers are quite thick and top heavy, back is still pretty much as it was before the cut so you can see how long it was before. All in all, I’d probably recommend and will do it on my DD who is big into manga as it’s looks like a bit of an anime cut!

Judy it will be a nightmare trying to cut that straight fringe. Think your best bet is to leave to all to grow down and get it cut when the hairdressers are allowed out again! At least you won’t end up with it in your eyes for a while yet.

Purplecatshopaholic · 01/04/2020 12:36

I needed it cut before this happened! Guess I am growing it now! Will need to trim fringe though. And wear hats if I cock it up! Lol

lubeybooby · 01/04/2020 12:38

can confirm this works well

incognitomum · 01/04/2020 12:39

I did dh's today but am an ex hairdresser. I trimmed a bit off my long hair. Am colouring mine today but always do.

briebuiltthiscity · 01/04/2020 12:41

I wish I’d attempted the Mumsnet haircut... I instead asked dh to give me a trim... waist length hair is now an uneven Bob Sad

Redcrayons · 01/04/2020 12:44

I was supposed to get my hair cut last week and obviously my appointment was cancelled.
I’ve resisted so far, but I’ve been browsing Pinterest looking at fringes and watching tutorials on YT. I know I shouldn’t. I can’t cut hair, i haven’t even got proper scissors, it never ends well.

And another note, what’s with all the men shaving their heads? I’ve seen about 4 or 5 on FB this week, it’s only been a week.

TerrorWig · 01/04/2020 21:39

I have really curly hair and had a trim at the beginning of the year. I couldn't get an appointment within 8 months at the place closest to me that I trust (it's Spring in Birmingham. I live in Liverpool Hmm so it's a pricey trip!).

I've tidied up the sides and cut in a fringe which I like a lot. It does tend to kind of split to the sides so it's a bit of a curly shag. But I like it!

jenganinja · 02/04/2020 16:35

Shock briebuiltthiscity that's a big difference! how did that happen?

Chochito · 02/04/2020 16:50

briebuiltthiscity What happened?

briebuiltthiscity · 02/04/2020 20:41

@jenganinja he just went far to short on the first snip... then just had to run with it. I’m getting used to it now but I was upset. I could tell it was bad by the look on his face - he looked mortified!

jenganinja · 02/04/2020 20:53

Oh dear. I'm glad you are used to it now and like it. I'm sure you won't be asking him again!

Chochito · 03/04/2020 18:58

briebuiltthiscity Oh gosh what a shame! How did your DH react?

briebuiltthiscity · 03/04/2020 21:26

@Chochito I could see by his face it was bad - I think he just went too far on the very first snip. He said it was where he was “looking down” and it didn’t seem so short!
