Anyone cutting their children's hair?

DS (12) really needs a haircut! I've bought some clippers and a pair of scissors and I am going to give it a go later.

Any tips?! I used to do his dad's hair years ago but that was just a grade 2 all over, with a strip left for a Mohican Grin so minimal actual skill involved.

DS normally had a grade 2 back and side, left longer on top, with a parting line shaved in. The standard 12 year old boy haircut!

Not sure whether to attempt that, or just trim round the sides, or do a grade 4 all over.

Watching this... I am going to have to step up to the scissors before too long... pity my poor sons

OkPedro · 25/03/2020 18:10

Checking in for tips 😁
Ds 8.. his hair is a disgrace. I don’t want to make it worse though!
I cut my dds hair yesterday, it was bum length.I cut it to just below her shoulder. It’s lovely and thick now. Boys hair though 🤔

I uaed to clipper DSs hair when he was in junior school (easier to spot the nits!).
After that he wanted a proper style so would only go to the barber's!

If your son is happy with a basic short back and sides clippers are pretty failsafe. Sit them on a chair or stool with plenty of natural light and that you are not reaching over or stretching. Start off with a 5 / 6 all over to tidy up. Its a bit trial and error to get best length but easier to take off than put back on? Go down to a 3 / 4 around the sides and back, follow the natural curve of the head then tidy round ears nape and temples with a 3 / 2. You might need scissors to cut round the ears.

That should give a nice neat look but if it doesn't you've got 3 weeks to grow it out!

I cut my toddlers hair today. You can tell that I'm no hairdresser and he can"t sit still.BlushGrin

DH cut our sons hair today. There were a lot of tears!!

EvilEdna1 · 25/03/2020 18:30

My DH let loose with clippers on our 17 yr old DS today.....it's not good.

princessbear80 · 25/03/2020 18:58

I will need to attempt this for DS and DP soon. Mrs Doyle’s advice sounds spot on, I’m going to try that.

User24689 · 25/03/2020 19:00

My 2 year old son's hair was crazy even before this happened. Our haircut appointment got double booked a couple of weeks back and now I'm kicking myself for not rebooking it! I tied the front up in a top knot today but he pulled it out after about an hour. I reckon I could possibly cut his fringe so considering attempting it this week!

So. I've tried watching on YouTube but it confuses me. Where do you start on their head?

IToldYouIWasFreaky · 26/03/2020 08:09

So, I did it. Mixed results!
The back looks decent. I used grade 4 and then trimmed the edges with no guard on. However, as I expected, trying to blend it into the top section is HARD, especially as DS has very thick, slightly wavy hair.
I did my best but I think he looks slightly mushroomy. I wanted to just grade 4 the whole lot but he wasn't keen so we've left it for now.
The main thing was to tidy the back and sides, especially around his ears as that was annoying him and we achieved that.

MrsDoyle, your instructions sound ace! Unfortunately, grade 4 is the largest guard we have.

Any tips for a novice using scissors? DS2 needs a cut, he has asd so clippers are out for him. I’d leave the hair to grow but he’s now getting agitated about it being too long and his head gets sweaty, but he also struggles badly with haircuts. I’m going to need the medicinal gin after this aren’t I...

dementedma · 26/03/2020 08:17

Did ds(18) yesterday and it looks good. Very easy with clippers. His head looks like a tennis ball!

SouthWestmom · 26/03/2020 08:19

Yes! I watched a video and am really proud of myself. New career in progress!

Grade 1 bottom to ears then grade four all over then grades three and two to 'fade'

No bald patches or weird chunks of hair!

EhOh · 26/03/2020 13:25

What clippers does everyone recommend?

PrincessBuggerPants · 26/03/2020 14:34

We've got clippers coming in the next couple of days. I want to give my (very hairy) 16 month old a slight mohawk. DH isn't keen. He is such a fussy wriggler think its that or shave the lot off Grin. None of this shading and fading malarkey for him.

sergeantmajor · 26/03/2020 14:50

I thinking about ordering some male grooming clippers. Any recommendations for brands?

SouthWestmom · 26/03/2020 15:56

We have Remington. Mine have coloured clips so I can tell which one to use. Husband has plain set.
