Purple / pink hair dye

Disclaimer - yes everything is shit at the moment and hair doesn’t matter BUT I am in probably long term isolation, away from my husband and battling with my mental health so using a frivolous distraction...

I have dark blonde hair that hasn’t been dyed for years (so ‘virgin hair’ as it were). I’d plucked up the courage to face a stupid fear I have of hairdressers and was booked in to have a colour next week. That will be cancelled now.

So.... I have always wanted purple or pink hair and thought this is something I could play with whilst locked down. Can anyone suggest any good products?

I am thinking the same. I usually get my colour done as a toner by the hair dresser but that won’t be happening now. I’d her her talk about Crazy Color in the past so I’m thinking about trying that. It’s semi permanent

If your hair is dark blonde you may need to lighten it first as it will be dark effect otherwise!

I have bleach blonde hair and have used Bleach London Rose pink and I really like it and got loads of compliments! Infact is thought about doing it in isolation to cheer myself up!
Around Halloween I tried using Luch Daddio shampoo as a dye on my hair, it was a really bright pink and didn’t look good on me and took ages to wash out!
But that method worked! Grin

Hmmmm Don’t think I am brave enough to bleach it too - last time I did that I was a teen and ended up with a very peculiar colour!

Arctic fox. You can only get it from Amazon in the UK. It's pricey, but I've been dying my hair various shades of purple and pink for years and this stuff is worth the money.

undercoveraessedai · 22/03/2020 11:13

Directions is my fave - mine is pink, purple and blue and the pinks and purples fade right out again. Blues and greens will stain your hair forever which I like but others don't :)

I'd def say don't bleach at home, just throw a deep/bright shade over your existing colour and see what happens?

Crazy colour !! No need to bleach your hair either.

I use Live hair colours. They do several purple colours including a plum colour and 'mystic violet' as well as a straight forward purple. I've had purple hair for years and my hair is grey with lots of white which is how it grew back after chemo so you should be fine.

There is a brand called manic panic that I've used before now that does bright colours too

RacheyCat · 26/03/2020 02:02

I bought some of the Shrine colour drops that you mix in with conditioner. I got them in purple, but it's closer to a pink really. Blending the dye with conditioner means you can decide the intensity of your colour rather than just getting the shade they give you, which works for me because I like a more pastel tone. I wish I'd bought some of the drops in blue too, so I could have blended a better purple shade. Other people like my colour, but I feel like I did pink enough as a teenager.

gingersausage · 26/03/2020 06:32

Please don’t use Live or LiveXXL. It destroys your hair and you’ll wish you’d never done it. However many people pop up and swear their hair is in perfect condition and they always use it; just don’t risk it.

Virgin dark blonde hair is fine for purple. Obviously it will come out darker than the swatch, because funky colours swatches assume you’ve bleached your hair and toned to white before use, hence why they never look quite the same as they do on the photoshopped “model”. Do a bit of research and find a purple that fades to pink rather than green, as it will be much easier to get rid of when you need to.

Manic Panic are really good. If you use their US website to choose your colour, they have pictures on each colour showing the effect on unbleached or dark hair. Then buy from somewhere in the UK.

Thanks everyone! I’m going to look at the options then take the plunge. I figure that if it goes wrong I will just have to deal with it as there are more important things in the world right now...

Manic panic pink washes out fast. Cotton candy pink was pretty. Artic fox is much better, it's worth buying the pastelizer to adjust the shade.

dementedma · 26/03/2020 07:09

I use Castings Plum colour and get loads of compliments on it.

RacheyCat · 26/03/2020 07:09

Realistically, adding conditioner to dye will adjust the shade. I don't think you need a specific pastelizer.

gingersausage · 26/03/2020 07:24

There’s no point pastelising or adding conditioner if you are putting colour on virgin hair. You need a full strength colour for it to even show up and it will automatically look darker whatever you do. Because the cuticle is smooth it won’t penetrate fully and will wash out much quicker anyway.

afrikat · 26/03/2020 08:23

I used Directions Cerise on my highlighted hair last week and it is PINK. Fairly cheap too

BetelgeuseIsOrionsArmpit · 27/03/2020 19:00

Manic Panic has always lasted best on my hair. I usually use Hot Hot Pink but recently I went for a combination of Ultraviolet first then the pink in top so it came out a really good magenta shade.

EvenFlo2 · 27/03/2020 19:29

I’m too scared!!!!!
So silly all this has considered I know.
