Is it time to go grey? How fast do box dyes fade?

I've been dying my hair for a good couple of years, I'm 48 and my hair is about collar bone length. We've just finished day 2 of self-isolating due to spending the weekend with someone with symptoms, and I fully expect that no-one will be going anywhere by the time that we are! My hair is quite dark, although over time I've gone from dying it the natural colour to a few shades lighter (5). I'm probably at least 50% grey judging by my brothers, will the longest bits dyed the most fade out over a few weeks? Or will the roots always be glaringly obvious?

The ends usually more absorbent for colour..reds fade fastest..I use the tubes and mix with peroxide and don't fade..eBay has good range and cheaper than Sally etc. Apply to lightest section first then after 20 mins work through to ends. Koleston and majirel are good brands.

I haven't been able to get to a salon since before Christmas (single mum and very clingy toddler) but I got a custom blend dye to apply at home from a company called esalon. I did have my colour formula from my hair dresser which helped a lot, but you upload a pic of yourself plus choose from colour charts. I've used it twice now and am really pleased. My grays were very obvious and didn't grow out in a nice way.

The box dye won't fade and you will have a glaringly obvious line between natural and dyed haired, I bit the bullet and just grew mine out and looked shocking for a good few months and as soon as I could I had a short bob cut to remove the dyed ends.
