grey hair - what do we think...

I'm a bit fed up with high lights every few months - I was wondering whether to let the grey bits just blend in gradually - I haven't much, just the odd bits around hair line at front -my natural colour is mousey/fair ... would this be giving into middle age or could it look quite stylish (with a good hair cut) ?

I'm too poor to keep getting my highlights done just letting my hair go grey naturally...

MaryAnnSingleton · 13/09/2007 17:25

I'm embracing the grey. I have very short hair and am not very vain. I also have a problem I don't think think I'm going to be able to express very well, but it's to do with society expecting women to aim for a standard of conformity/beauty that doesn't hold true for men. I don't buy anti-wrinkle creams and what-not for the same vague reason.

MaryAnnSingleton · 13/09/2007 17:33

yes, Lio, agree with your thoughts there - it's very hard not to get caught up though - also, I do it because it makes me feel good, but I'd like to see what it's like embracing the grey- plus I can't really afford the highlighting every few months !!

you look very young maryann, i reckon it will suit you if you grow it out.

fridayschild · 13/09/2007 20:06

I am a vain brunette but have no time to get the grey touched up! Going grey here, one cruella de ville streak which I quite like and then more and more white ones on the rest.

MaryAnnSingleton · 13/09/2007 20:13

it is my usual name notanotter, since August anyway...
and thank you southeastastra ..I'm hoping to see a friend who has known me for aeons who will no doubt tell me what's what in the way that close pals do - she has always advised me on hair stuff but we don't live very near each other anymore.

NotAnOtter · 13/09/2007 20:14

MaryAnnSingleton · 13/09/2007 20:15

You look great for nearly 49. Well, you look great anyway but, of, ykwim. I think you can get away with grey roots for a while because your hair isn't so dark, no harsh contrast. My roots are about the same as yours atm but my hair is a lot darker. It does pee me off having to dye it though so I leave it longer and longer in between.

MaryAnnSingleton · 13/09/2007 20:24

Gosh, thanks tinker...I'll just see how it goes and as long as it doesn't frighten anyone. It'll need a trim soonish,so can review situation then. Plus once my 49th bday comes I might suddenly realise that the next one is 50...

I am almost 100% grey (I'm 42). My natural colour is very dark, and I always dyed my hair close to my natural colour. In the last year, I have gone blonde, figuring that the roots won't be so dramatic.

I pay a fortune to have my hair done, approx every 8 weeks. I get 3 or 4 different colours with the objective to break up the sight of the grey roots.

yogabird · 13/09/2007 21:01

someone asked me at a party the other night why didn't i colour my hair. She softened this with, because you are so beautiful??!!

It made me think and this is the answer.

  1. Can't be bothered with it.
  2. Don't care enough - rarely get chance to look in the mirror anyway!
  3. Feel that I should embrace the way I am and like it (and i do mostly)
  4. Don't want all those chemicals on my head

I have dark brown hair with a generous sprinkling of grey and often really like it...but sometimes I give in and colour it dark blonde - just dyes the greys and you don't get that horrid block of artificial colour which looks so crap. At the moment it's quite grey and i am positive about it - just turned 40 too.

thanks KerryMum - that's a comment that I shall look back at when I feel like an old husk, which is fairly often ! The picture isn't very recent but I do look the same and my hair is same.

lilibet · 14/09/2007 08:23

you look good!

I would stick with it, especially as you are fair, any regrowth will blend in nicely.

I used to be a redhead , now if I let it go I'm a horrid sort of salt and pepper mouse iyswim.

BecauseImWorthIt · 14/09/2007 08:25

Love your illustrations MAS.

Am also glad there is someone older than me! (even if only by a year!)
