hair advice - grey

Hi,
I have been home dyeing my hair for about 30 years now, using permanant dyes - similar reddish colours.
recently Ive been wondering about letting my hair go back to its normal colour - which is mostly grey to be honest.
Ive not coloured for several weeks and it looks a state.
I usually wear it in a messy bun type thing for work. its long and very thick.
my budget is super tight - I usually cut it myself, using the 'unicorn pony tail method' - which to be honest looks ok.
Im wondering if anyone could suggest the best ways of growing out the colour - it needs to be a cheap solution though
I know everyone is probably gasping in horror at home dye/cutting but it's what I can do at the mo.

so do I just leave it to grow and keep trimming
or
would a home highlighting kit help to make the greys less obvious??

or is there any other ideas??

I am going grombré and really enjoying watching the transition. I follow a FB group called Going Gorgeously Grey and it has really opened my eyes to the beauty of grey hair. Some women tone it get highlights to blend, but most let it grow out naturally. There’s still a lot of brown in mine so the demarcation isn’t that obvious and I keep it in long loose waves. I’ve had quite a few comp,intents about it.

Messing around with roots will get you into another dying chore.
I just grew mine out. Some days I was fine with it others days I hated it. It's been about 8 years since I left the roots treadmill. I still tinker with my hair with bleach and colour but it's now naturally an amazing range of streaks and colour.
I know you said money is tight but Hair college are usually crying out for clients and the prices are very inexpensive if you fancy a different eye on it.

@silverstreaks - good point about the roots. thank you for the brilliant idea about the hair college - it appears my local uni run a salon for tudents to work in and the prices are really good. I may actually be able to afford a decent cut, maybe they can have a look and give me some tips whilst Im there- thank you!

I colour stripped mine 3 times with colourb4, then as I was white at the front I bleached that section. As I wear my hair twisted up, it wasn't then really noticeable, esp with liberal use of purple shampoo.

There are groups on Facebook that will support the transition. There's a thing on the Pantene site that lets you see yourself grey. I tried it. Looked like a witch and went to have my roots touched up.
