Giving up on curly girl method - anyone done it?

I've followed the curly girl method for years, but recently it's been getting on my nerves; I have very thick hair that's annoying to dry, and it gets tangled ridiculously easily. I also moved recently and I think the water must be different here or something because my curls suddenly started looking rubbish.

Anyway... I just bought one of those heated brush things, I sprayed on some heat protector and used it, and I love the result! It's not overly straight, but it's nice and smooth and looks natural. If it hasn't turned to a frizzy mess by tomorrow I think I'm going to get a 'normal' haircut and do this from now on.

So my question is whether anyone else has given up the method, and if so did you keep any elements of it, or just go straight back to silicone and sulphates? I'm tempted to try minimising silicones and only using a sulfate shampoo occasionally because I do think dryness was my main problem pre-CG, but any advice from those with experience would be welcome!
