Will a nail technician gel over home done tips

Title says it all really - I do my own tips as my nails are absolutely VILE and I'm ashamed. Like half way down the nail bed. But I've been advised if I have gel overlay they'll last longer and I'll get a better finish.

Would a salon simply gel overlay and polish my own?

They’ll probably soak your tips off and apply some new ones, then put a gel overlay and colour on top.

Why not buy a nail kit online that comes with gel and do it yourself at home? Surely if you can do your own tips you can do your own gel? Amazon/ebay have starter nail kits that cost less than one nail session at a salon

I'm a nail tech and no I wouldn't as it would probably invalidate my insurance. As a rule I don't work over or remove another tech's work either for the same reason. I would much rather you came to me with bare nails so I could advise the best way to go.
