I'm approaching 40 but I have to wash my hair every day else its greasy! I know its not good for my hair though. Does anyone find dry shampoo works?

The idea that you can "train" your hair to be less greasy by not washing it is ridiculous.
Hormones control how greasy your skin and hair is.
I had a friend who didnt wash her hair as it "self regulated" after a week she stank, a few weeks and she smelt like the walking dead.
Sebum smells, obvs we all produce different amounts but 10 days 🤮

Discodisco9 · 29/02/2020 14:16

Stop using shampoo, just use conditioner - your hair will stop being greasy within a week or two!

Discodisco9 · 29/02/2020 14:18

Ps those with dry scalps will see great improvements by ditching the shampoo

Quicklittlenamechange · 29/02/2020 14:24

🙈

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 29/02/2020 15:29

My hair didn't self regulate ,it just looked and felt disgusting.

Miljea · 29/02/2020 15:44

Same here. Left it for a fortnight (😳), gently bristle brushed it.

It certainly didn't self-regulate', I can assure you!

Discodisco9 · 29/02/2020 16:01

I love my hair without shampoo - conditioner works just as well

TeaAddict235 · 29/02/2020 21:57

@Discodisco9 but our scalp does need to be thoroughly cleaned from time to time (obviously scalp dependent). Shampoos are not evil, this is a recent marketing campaign in order to get people using more of certain products. Washing my own 4 hair with conditioner alone does not cut the grease (pun intended), neither does it clean the strands of pollution, pollen or sweat. Conditioner does not have a sufficient surface agent propensity to actively 'clean' the hair. I say this as a chemical engineer with a PhD. We do not clean our bodies with lotion, and the data shows that the purchasing of soaps (both liquid and solid form) is rising as body cream washes declines - the latter is more reflective of a conditioner. Soaps cleanse. Conditioners recondition the strands.

That's ok @MyOtherProfile, I guessed it wS something like the Lush bars and bought a lemon one. It apparently last many, many shampoos, but I'm sceptical as it is very small! Just used it earlier and will report back on its effectiveness!

mnthrowaway202020 · 29/02/2020 22:00

Not me. My hair is fine, naturally slightly wavy and damaged due to highlights. Washing it everyday would make it look extra fine, frizzy and dry. It doesn’t really get greasy as it’s quite dry.

Much prefer washing 2-3 times a week and having a decent fresh blowdry where my hair actually looks shiny and healthier.

HundredMilesAnHour · 29/02/2020 22:19

Excellent post @TeaAddict235, thanks for your insight.

ElderAve · 29/02/2020 22:23

Yep, my goar has been washed at least once a day for the last 40 years. If I'm going out in the evening I wash it again. It's my one requirement for a holiday. I don't mind roughing it, no make up and no hairdryer is fine but it has to be washed. Itches like hell otherwise.

kirkandpetal · 29/02/2020 22:45

I wish my hair almost every day. If I'm working from home and no likely to see anyone (anyone I would be bothered about seeing anyway!) I sometimes skip a wash, but my hair feels wrong and just not clean. I also will wash again, if I have time, if going out at night. Always have since my 20s.

I don't mind washing it every morning, would feel weird having a shower without washing it iykwim. Plus it's a wee treat to myself...I get up early, have my shower then dry it (it's mid length and thick), then do makeup whilst catching up with a comedy programme on iplayer (using subtitles obvs). 1/2 hour usually covers it.

I don't use any fancy shampoos, but will occasionally use Aussie Mega shampoo/conditioner. It feels weird the first few washes, really strips the hair, but each wash after that is lovely and there is a marked improvement in my hair.

I also sometimes - when I remember - reverse wash. Ie. condition first, then use shampoo. Again feels weird and so wrong, but does make hair soft.

MyOtherProfile · 29/02/2020 23:45

@drigon I think you will be surprised. One bar lasts us 3 months and that's with me and my DH using it. So it works out cheaper than shampoo anyway.

Discodisco9 · 01/03/2020 01:50

@TeaAddict235 whatever works for you, can’t say the same myself

Thedevilofsmallthings · 01/03/2020 07:26

Tried for over a year to wash every other day but have gone back to every day.
I could only do every other day using dry shampoo or tying it back.
Hormones make it more or less greasy.
I was hoping it would start to self regulate but no it didn't.

Discodisco9 · 01/03/2020 17:05

@Thedevilofsmallthings hi, even if you only shampoo once a week it is not long enough to stop getting greasy hair - it’s all or nothing I’m afraid! You can use just conditioner though in the meantime while your hair recovers. There are also loads of shampoo alternatives recommended by lulalistic and the hippy shake in her “no poo” guide x

A few people have asked about going sulphate and silicone free.

I will share what I did but suggest looking at Curly Girl Method approved products. I don't do the full method just use the products.

I started off using an SLS free shampoo by Happy Naturals which you can buy in Sainsbury's and silicone free conditioner from ultimate blends.

This improved my hair a bit but then I decided to try proper co-washing and that is so much better.

You need a scalp brush so you can give your head a good scrub without knackering your fingers. I got mine very cheaply on amazon.

Then I used As I Am co-wash to wash with and ultimate blends banana hair food to condition the ends (my hair is waist length if it is short you might want a lighter conditioner or none at all). This was brilliant, but As I Am isn't available in my local shops and isn't cheap so I decided to try something else that I had seen recommended.

I now wash with XHC conditioner which is available in B&M, savers or pound shops. I still use ultimate blends on the ends of my hair but I can just use the XHC if I want to.

You need to spend a good 2 minutes massaging your scalp with the brush to get your hair really clean. This can tangle it a bit so you may need to use a wide tooth comb to detangle while you condition.

Before you start doing this do a last wash with your SLS shampoo to get rid of any silicone build up then ditch any silicone containing products.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 02/03/2020 19:37

I tried co washing today on the neck of this thread, won't be doing that again!!

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 02/03/2020 19:53

drigon · 02/03/2020 21:33

Tried the Lush lemon shampoo bar on Saturday, well, it's about as good as the green Tresemmé. After 1.5 days, noticeably greasy. It didn't help that my son thought it was soap and used it in the shower, leaving it wet as well! It is now very small and the burnt lemon slice (why?) doesn't help as it needs to be discarded. Not really a convert for a £7.99 product.

drigon · 02/03/2020 21:34

However, my hair was lovely and light and soft after using the bar. A gorgeous smell to it too.

missanony · 02/03/2020 21:40

I wash most days. I have fine hair. I can get 2 days out of it if I tie it up when I get home from work and leave it up at night.

I also find that if I use loads of dry shampoo on it before bed that it then looks clean when I wake up but the time I have to then spend styling it means that I may as well have just washed it!

AngryAtYouTube · 02/03/2020 21:47

Yes.

Drives me mad. My skin is still greasy too. Thought this would long be over.

Although recently in France I bought some DOP egg shampoo as had read it was good.

And it can get me to 3 days if I use that, then rinse with clean water.

Keeping my fingers crossed our Easter holiday goes ahead so I can stock up with a load of it!

whattodo2019 · 02/03/2020 22:03

Me!! My hair is so thin? The wind can make it look greasy,, the warm weather makes it dank and frizzy... washing everyday is the only thing I can do. I have recently started to use 'All in one milk' spray conditioner which is amazing on my thin hair.
