What can I wear with this dress?

DH's son is getting married this summer and, although it's a bit early, I've bought this dress Wallis (the pink version) as I saw it on the website and loved it.

I don't usually wear dresses (or get dressed up!) if I can help it so please help me with what to wear with it! I've got a dodgy ankle so can't wear heels for too long so I was thinking of wedges? What sort of jacket or cardigan?

I'm 5'7" and a 16-18 if that makes any difference.

Sorry for the questions but I have absolutely no idea as you can probably tell! It's at a 5 star hotel and I know I'm going to feel out of place but I'd like to look half decent whilst feeling out of place!

I would maybe have a cropped white linen jacket and tben a contrasting colour bag and shoes. Pistachio or pale blue maybe. Also, you could take the dress in a bag out shopping and ask for support and advice from sales assistants?

Ninkanink · 26/02/2020 20:59

Wedges aren’t actually that comfortable. In your shoes (sorry!) I would wear strappy sandals with a low to mid block heel.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 26/02/2020 21:13

Thanks both for the advice. I hadn't thought of taking the dress and asking for advice.

Regarding the shoes, I'll have to go shoe shopping (my idea of hell!) and try them on before buying. The problem I have with my ankle is caused by a ganglion next to the ankle bone so I need to find something that won't aggravate it. I'll be taking my trusty Birkenstocks for the evening though as I won't be able to wear sandals all day.

That dress is gorgeous! Agree a white linen jacket would look fab

dontgobaconmyheart · 27/02/2020 00:30

White linen jacket sounds ideal OP so long as it's well fitted. If shoes are an issue I'd find something neutral and focus on drawing attention up with jewellery or hair accessories etc.

I think that sort of colour really needs a tan to avoid it washing one out is the only thing I will say. That is the colour of my skin and would look awful on me in photographs.

JustaScratch · 27/02/2020 06:31

I bought these the other day - they are wide fit and not very high, but actually look nicer than in the photo! Would the strap aggravate your ankle?

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 27/02/2020 07:11

Oooh I might have to have a look at those M&S sandals. It depends where the strap sits but hopefully they'll be ok.

I am worried about my lack of a tan with this colour as I'm very pale. I hate fake tan so that's not an option. To be honest I'd be more comfortable in the black and white version but I'm not sure I could wear that to a wedding!

If it doesn't look right this was my other option at the moment but I'm not sure it's 'weddingy' enough - Wallis 2

If this doesn't work out I'll leave it until nearer the time and look then. I'm hoping the pink dress is ok as I hate clothes shopping!

Ignore the navy and white spotted dress, I've just realised it matches my dressing gown!

NiteFlights · 27/02/2020 08:53

Oh I love the spotty one! I also think it might be easier shoe wise. Have you bought both dresses? What colours do you usually wear? Both dresses are very nice Smile

M&S have a good range of mid-height heels. A block would be more up to date than a wedge. Are you okay with slingbacks?

Ninkanink · 27/02/2020 09:00

I wouldn’t worry about the tan - there’s no law that says women must have tanned skin.

Ninkanink · 27/02/2020 09:03

Ah just saw previous comment referring to colour of dress and skin tone which is a fair point.

Your back up dress is lovely too!

NiteFlights · 27/02/2020 09:10

M&S definitely worth a look. A couple of shoe suggestions:

Going for a ‘matching’ look with the pink, these are nice and the heel is quite cool.

These would look very classic and polished with the navy dress.

www.marksandspencer.com/rope-clutch-bag/p/clp60375919
A cute, cheap and cheerful bag that could work with the navy dress.

Or a more expensive option, also for the navy.

With your ankle problem, I’d avoid strappy sandals and go for something fairly classic and simple in shape/style. There’s also quite a lot of ruffles on the pink dress and you don’t want too much going on.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 27/02/2020 09:54

I’ve only bought the pink one at this stage due to the dressing gown problem but I think I’ll order the navy one as well as it should be easier to find accessories.

I wear a variety of colours but pinks are probably my favourite

OP posts:
Ninkanink · 27/02/2020 09:56

Ah yes didn’t think about ankle problems and straps. Maybe just a low heeled court shoe then.

Sadly I can’t recommend M&S as I am boycotting. But if you can get to a Clark’s they often have quite good looking, supportive and comfortable shoes (contrary to expectations).

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 28/02/2020 18:22

The dress has arrived and, despite me being very pale, it looks fine because of the dark flower pattern and I love it. I've been thinking about a jacket and to be honest I don't fancy linen as it's scratchy so I was wondering about a shrug. What about this - shrug in ivory?

Oh and it matches my pink Birkenstocks so I'll be fine for the evening!

ProperVexed · 28/02/2020 18:48

I love the shrug...think it will be perfect with the dress. And both such a good price! Monsoon is also good for shrugs and little jacket things.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 28/02/2020 19:02

Thank you, I'm going to order it and then I'm sorted apart from shoes and bag! I'm pleased with the price as I don't want to spend a lot on something I'm unlikely to wear again but I need to look decent!

What a lovely thread - Pink you are going to look great

VenusClapTrap · 28/02/2020 21:02

I love the pink dress! Glad you’re happy with it op. I agree that plain, low heeled courts are the way to go.

dusky777 · 28/02/2020 22:25

I have a dodgy ankle and wide feet. I wore these all day and night at a wedding last summer. Wear them in around the house first if you can....I didnt have time. My feet were a bit sore by the end of the night but they are the only heels I've been able to wear In 4 years!

EnidButton · 29/02/2020 02:19

I love that dress Pink. You're going to look fab!

Do you fancy wearing a hat? Or is that complicating things too much? What you have is already gorgeous, I just really like hats and headpieces.

catwithflowers · 29/02/2020 06:30

Love the pink dress! So pretty 😊

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 29/02/2020 09:11

Thank you for all your help and lovely comments!

I'm going to order the white sandals from Next. Even if they do rub my ankle a bit I'm not too worried at spending £26. I'll order the shrug from Wallis as well. I've got a black one from a few years ago and they are quite good quality for the price.

I won't be wearing a hat as I have very curly hair that will poke out all ways under a hat and the top will be fluffy and flat when I take it off!

One last question - do you think I could get away with a black clutch bag? I bought this one recently and I've used it once Bag. I was thinking it might be alright as the dress does have black flowers on it and it'll stop me looking too pale!

Of course not but the point the poster was making was that some colours can make some skin tones look washed out and faded. Black clothes make me washed out,, pastels look great.
It was just a suggestion.

The dress is lovely. I would wear a cream shrug and possibly low block sandals if that would suit your feet.

notacooldad · 29/02/2020 09:22

Sorry Ninkanink
I made a comment about your post before I read your second comment about it!!
