Why aren't all mascaras sealed now?

Were they sealed and they've stopped or have I only just noticed?

I went to buy one in Boots today and some (of the the same brand) were sealed and some not. I asked an assistant and she said that's how they come, some sealed and some not.

I emailed No7 a while back and asked why their mascaras aren't sealed and they said their customers don't ask for it (this one isHmm)

It's just if people pick them up,open them and then don't put the lid back properly you've potentially got a dried out one.

Lipsticks are usually sealed and eye shadows so why not mascaras?

Grumble,grumble, grumble...

Plastic maybe?

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 26/02/2020 14:57

I doubt it especially as the tube is plastic anyway. And why seal other makeup but not stuff that actually goes near eyes? Confused

I don't mean shrink wrapped btw I just mean hygiene sealed. And there must be a way to do it not using plastic if that is the issue.

I agree they should be sealed. And lipsticks. I bought Maybelline Great Lash mascara yesterday which was sealed and took me bloody ages to unwrap. It's basic hygiene really

CatherineTheNotSoGreat · 26/02/2020 15:49

I agree - they should be hygienically sealed. I won't buy unsealed products.

Really though?

How often do you see mascara tubes with their lids half off in Boots? Not many...?

I saw some this morning, some that were shrink wrapped and opened, some without shrink wrapping with lids not sealed, hence me asking the assistant.

I see people opening make up all the damned time, it annoys the hell out of me. I also know people who think it's perfectly acceptable to try on nail polish in the shops, which makes me cringe. I don't want to buy nail polish that someone else has used! If I want something that comes unsealed I buy it online, less likely to have been tampered with.

veryvery · 26/02/2020 18:13

They can put a sticker on as a less plasticky seal. Burt's Bees do that with their lip salves.

BeNiceToYourSister · 26/02/2020 21:22

Agree! Nothing wrong with adding a paper seal

porple · 26/02/2020 21:24

i won’t buy unsealed makeup

WickedlyPetite · 26/02/2020 21:38

My local Superdrug is really scummy.

I see women and girls opening unsealed make up, sticking their fingers in it, taking mascara wands out of the tube to look at them, I've even seen someone trying on a lipstick (not a tester) then sticking it back on the shelf and buying a fresh unopened one rather than the one she'd just infected with her own lip germs.

I won't buy unsealed make up.

BemidjiMinnesota · 26/02/2020 21:56

Unsealed make up is disgusting.

I once saw some teenage girls in Boots opening mascara and putting it on their actual eyelashes to test it out. Shock Those mascara were probably 90% conjunctivitis.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 26/02/2020 22:27

I'm going to email Maybelline and ask why they don't seal them! Let's see if their reply is as wishy washy as No 7's...

I totally agree OP and recently returned about 1/3 of a boots order because the cosmetics weren't sealed. Who in their right mind would use something on their eyes that could have been tested or exposed to anything. It isn't as though cosmetics have an infinite shelf life either so having them unsealed surely reduces this and yet you pay the same price.

They were really awkward about refunding it and I got quite (privately) cross about it when the assistant kept trying to drag me over to the stand to demonstrate that they often sell them unsealed and it's 'completely normal' Hmm
