Itchy, spotty skin since a general anaesthetic....?

I have very fair skin (I’m ginger) which flushes easily and is slightly dry and can be sensitive to harshly fragranced products.

In January I had to have a general anaesthetic, only for 10 mins in day surgery. But ever since that procedure (gynae) the skin on my scalp, face, neck and chest has become very itchy and sensitive. I’m getting itchy red spots which are almost like hives. Not dry or scaly at all. Just very itchy!

I’ve reverted to a bland emollient to wash and moisturise. Avoiingmake up. Taking antihistamines isn’t really helping. I already use fairy washing powder and softener. No change in diet or shampoo.

I have a sample tube of hyurolic (spelling?!) face serum and out of curiosity and desperation I tried a bit this morning and amazingly it completely calmed it all down, best skin day I’ve had since the operation. But tonight it has flared back up again!

Has anyone else had their skin go wonky after an anaesthetic? Is it a common reaction? And why would hyurolic acid help??

I've had reactions to dyes/medicines used during surgeries but not directly anesthetic. Not sure what you had done OP but maybe the clue is in that/existing health issues, hormones if it's gynae, rather than the sedation. That would have been a small amount and would have left your system fairly quickly so I'd be looking towards other things perhaps - medication, diet, washing powder, any metals introduced into your body as a result of the procedure (the coil etc).

Have you tried antihistamines or having a pharmacist have a look and see what they think? Worth a go!

Yes I may have to get someone to take a look because it’s so irritating. Looks horrible too. The procedure was an ERCP following a miscarriage and I think my hormones have gone all over the place since it happened. But this seems like an unusual reaction to hormones right....? Itchy spots? As apposed to acne type skin? But I’m nearly 40 so maybe that’s why!

I put more hyurolic acid serum on today but it hasn’t had the same effect.

I am, however, feeling really run down so it could just be that!

Just saw your last question, I tried antihistimes, one a day for a week but it didn’t change anything. But it could be that I need a different type.

I’m dehydrated, I know that, long term issue. So today I’m going to force water down my neck and get 2l in my body!
