Late 40s. Where do you shop

I’m not seeing much on my usual go to shops so Mint Velvet, Hush, Marks and John Lewis.

Looking for suggestions for other good online clothes shopping.

OP posts:

Sosandar is my favourite. Fashion styles but wearable for 40s/50s women. They have great sales and money off codes. Dresses delivered in a great big box (like a US movie!) and returns are free. Love it.

NomDeQwerty · 23/02/2020 21:35

I got all excited because I'd never heard of Me and Em.
But....

It’s tricky isn’t it

I buy Cos, Toast in the sales or on eBay,Uniqlo, the odd bit of Monki and Zara and that’s about it. My favourite trousers at the moment are very thick twill peg leg ones from Kin.

It’s worth following Jenny Sue Garcia on Instagram and I also like Wears My Money. Both are in their forties and are good at how to dress as much as in buying new things

dkl55 · 24/02/2020 09:01

Nom... I really like that 😂😂. Be good with some clumpy boots or docs. It's all about what you personally like and feel comfortable with. Maybe the OP could elaborate on that and people could suggest accordingly? I do find most stuff I like is now European or American (Reformation is good at sale time too). I find the British stuff often has horrible fabrics or is just a bit dull.

NomDeQwerty · 24/02/2020 16:12

Just sayin' ...🤣

mrslebon · 24/02/2020 16:16

48 and I will shop anywhere as long as I like it and it makes me feel good. Looking at my recent orders, I buy from Zara, Hush, Mango, Topshop, H&M, Jigsaw, Reserved, Other Stories, River Island etc.

I like Whistles but I tend to buy off preloved off Depop. Insta is a hive of great ideas and I love the smaller independents for accessories such as Queen Bee Collective and also sweatshirts from Disko Kids.

mrslebon · 24/02/2020 16:16

Oh and Trouva!! Trouva is amazing.

Very · 24/02/2020 16:20

I miss @bonsoir
She used to be really great at this sort of thing.
I actually have a saved file of her sartorial advice for the proper dressing of self and daughters Blush

Beaumont Organic

fantasmasgoria1 · 24/02/2020 16:26

I'm nearly 45 and I shop mainly in alternative shops. I dress goth and I will never change
I just think people should dress how they want to not feel they have to dress a certain way at certain ages.

Very · 24/02/2020 16:46

I agree fantasmagoria but usually your body shape changes a bit over the decades and you often find you can’t blithely trip into Topshop any more like you used to. Dressing well requires a real rethink for many of us after 40.

I’ve actually really enjoyed this stage (after mourning my slender young self for a few years). Following bloggers like midlifechic and doesmybumlook40 really helped.

BookMeOnTheSudExpress · 24/02/2020 17:08

Botemp is also a bit of a stylish Bonsoiry Guru- check out the French chic threads.

I trawled round eBay last night and picked up some Jigsaw trousers.

You lot have inspired me to spend a bit of time looking for stuff on there and the pre-loved sites. I am in such a rut- black or navy work trousers with ankle boots and a ribbed polo neck. Will become black or navy trousers and a white T or stripy top come May. Grin

AGoodPodcastAndANiceCupOfTea · 24/02/2020 17:10

I love Seasalt and am surprised that no one has already mentioned them!

TigsytheTiger · 24/02/2020 18:01

I'm mid 50's and shop at Zara, Oliver Bonas, ASOS, Silkfred (bit hit and miss but have found a few gems), River Island and Whistles.

Not a fan of M&S or Mint Velvet, even in my advancing years I find them a bit mumsy tbh.

Karmatime · 24/02/2020 18:03

Early 50s and mainly shop at Jigsaw, Whistles, White Company, Hush and Sweaty Betty - I used to like Boden, White Stuff and Fat Face but haven’t bought anything there for a few years now.

flopsytheflatcat · 24/02/2020 18:11

Hell Bunny
Collectif
Joanie Clothing

(But I'm a bit of a vintage buff 😀)

FreakStar · 24/02/2020 18:13

I really can't see the appeal of me+em! Some of the stuff is nice but some is horrendous and the pricing is beyond ridiculous unless you are shopping at 70% off in the arse end of the website.

I like Mint velvet but think you have to be choosey so you don't up looking too cliched with all the asymmetric hems and Hush is the same but with stars and worse quality.

I quite like Other Stories and like the odd thing in Cos but avoid the tent like dresses! Other Stories is good for shoes and socks!

Hallhuber which is stocked only in House of Fraser is a nice range and somethings in French Connection are nice. Their jeans are my fave.

Whistles is another where I begrudge paying full price- you get the occasional nice dress or jumper in there but always shop in the sale!

Recently I've bought nice things in Monsoon and am liking Oasis for reasonably priced tops and dresses.

FreakStar · 24/02/2020 18:14

Seasalt is horrible- it's what people who walk dogs on beaches all day wear!

Thankssomuch · 24/02/2020 18:21

I sometimes wear Seasalt. I don’t have a dog and, alas, don’t get to walk on beaches all day.

BookMeOnTheSudExpress · 24/02/2020 18:40

The stripy tops are the best quality ever though. I may have about 14 helping me further into my rut!
Agree totally with pp about Hush and Mint Velvet.
My favourite non stripy top is actually Jaeger. Linen (but not that dreadful crumpled cheapo linen) longish with drawstring neck. Bloody love it but restrict wearing it in case it wears out.

Ellapaella · 24/02/2020 18:42

I have a dog and I walk her two times a day on the beach. I have a Seasalt coat...
walking cliche obviously 🙄
It's actually a very practical dog walking coat... although I'm not particularly worried about being on trend while walking the dog, most of us dog walker here on the North East Coast are more concerned with keeping warm!

StCharlotte · 24/02/2020 18:57

In the last week I have bought stuff from Boden, M&S, Debenhams and Dorothy Perkins.

I'm exceedingly late 40s Wink

dontcallmelen · 24/02/2020 19:14

Seasalt has some lovely lined cotton shift dresses last summer didn’t think they were a horror show tbh.
French connection sometimes have a few gems & the sale prices are really good reductions, river island again amongst all polyester sometimes have some good things, zara the same & again have some good cotton summer tops, also like whistles/jigsaw but only in the sales.
Sezane is lovely I probably dip in & have a browse at most of the retailers mentioned, but it’s a mission I think especially with sizing I’m like a pp very short & quite small & finding jeans & trousers really is quite difficult.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 24/02/2020 20:06

Seasalt annoys me because it's one of the few places that still sells cotton summer dresses, but they are virtually all blue (I hate blue) or drab greens.
