Sex after a bikini wax

I'm about to get my 1st ever bikini wax at the grand age of 42.
Any tips in general would be gratefully received but I want to know if I can have sex the same day? I've looked on-line and it recommends to wait 24 hours after but is this just being overly cautious?

On the sex front, I never found it to be all that painful, I mean, it’s obviously not painless having it done but it never really stayed sore for me afterwards.
I’d have sex the same day no problem.

I would warn you though that every salon I have had this done at I’ve caught them double dipping.

Some have doubled all the way through, some only for the ‘outer’ less intimate part but they haven’t used a fresh stick for every swipe the whole way through.

I would have the wax and then about a week later I’d get thrush 🤢
Every time. Without fail.
It took me a while to twig what was going on.

Also, another ‘beautician’ left me with a lovely fungal infection and open wound after I trusted her to wax my underarms.
She went over the same spot too many times and burned the skin.

Basically, I’d be really seriously cautious about getting a wax.

Yikes frosted how unlucky. That's not been my experience at all and I've been Hollywood waxing regularly for 12 years. But yes hygiene is something to be mindful of.

OP I'm a bit sore for a day or so afterwards then fine after this time, you may find the skin a little tender so if you've got a hot night planned, maybe think ahead and work backwards to be on the safe side. Everyone is different though.

Unfortunately the salon could only fit me in Sat morning and bf was meant to be having his children this weekend but has just found out that they've been invited to a sleepover so we were going to have our own first "sleepover"! I'm only having a bikini wax - haven't got the guts for Brazilian or Hollywood!

How exciting! In that case you should be ok, but if it's your first one, a couple of neurofen or similar should help to dull the pain (I don't actually find it that painful but again, it's been years lol). Have fun!

StarlightLady · 18/02/2020 18:47

I think if you are not being fully done you should be slightly tender but OK. But is there not another salon nearby which you could try a day or so before. You want quality sex not “ouchy sex”!

I agree about taking a couple of pain killers upfront. It also hurts more just before a period.

StarlightLady · 18/02/2020 18:56

PS: Hit send too soon in error.

If you do go for a full Hollywood, the extra (pleasant) sensitivity is really worth it. It’s not just about looks!

Chochito · 18/02/2020 19:30

It is fine to have sex afterwards.

Onenightonlyplease · 18/02/2020 19:46

StarlightLady I have flirted with the idea of a Hollywood but the idea of someone waxing my labia 😱! So I'm starting with a basic bikini then hopefully get the courage to go a bit further!! I am also incredibly hairy, I'd be happy with most salons "before" pics, so am already a bit worried about the beautician's reaction when she sees me let alone flashing my bits at her!

My waxes were Hollywood’s, I was less embarrassed about my labia than my arse cheeks!

I fully agree with whichever poster it was, might have been starlight, who mentioned the good kind of sensitivity.

I wouldn’t go for a wax again because of the experiences I’ve had but all the hair off is great, I epilate mine and shave the inner area.

emsyj37 · 18/02/2020 20:19

I have sugar rather than wax - its quicker, less likely to result in ingrown hair as the hairs are pulled out in the direction of growth and because the sugar is body temperature you dont get any redness or sensitivity afterwards. I have a Hollywood - I'm an 'all or nothing ' kinda gal.

Onenightonlyplease · 18/02/2020 21:20

frostedviolets my eyes are watering at the thought of epilating down there! And shaving the inner parts - you must have a steady hand! 😀

Check in advance to make sure they will be using hot wax - not strip wax. Also, check they are a qualified intimate waxer

Chochito · 19/02/2020 17:23

Yes, has to be hot wax.

doadeer · 19/02/2020 17:27

I'm usually a bit tender but not enough I couldn't have sex.

Yes check it's hot wax not strip wax.

I get a Brazilian so it's labia and bum but they leave a nice triangle at the top so I have a semblance of looking "natural" 🤣

Hope it's a good salon. In my experience it's worth going somewhere quality. I go to a place called strip that only do waxing.

And don't be embarrassed they will have done this so many times before!

Onenightonlyplease · 19/02/2020 20:48

Thanks everyone! Why should I go for hot wax, what's the difference between that and strip wax? Do I choose or is it down to the salon?
I hadn't thought to check they were qualified, I assumed if they were working in the salon they'd have the relevant qualifications!

I wait a day or two before sex. I find it too sensitive the same day but others may not. I would not recommend a strip wax down there unless you really are just taking in the bikini line. You really need a hot wax or a lycon wax. Theres an oil that puts a barrier between the wax and the skin so only the hair gets pulled which is 100% less painful than a stip wax. Sorry I'm not trying to scare you just talking from experience.

ViserionTheDragon · 19/02/2020 22:13

Hot wax is put on the skin, it dries within a couple of minutes then it is pulled off, whereas with strip wax, the wax is applied and then removed with wax strips. Definitely go for hot wax for your bikini, you will be saving yourself from a lot of pain!

doadeer · 19/02/2020 22:14

Strip wax is where they put a thin layer of wax then a piece of paper over and pull off.

Hot wax is a much thicker texture, no paper over and they let the wax cool then pull off.

Hot wax doesn't pull the skin so much and it's generally less painful.

I would call the salon as ask because they need to heat the wax in advance.

Cookiebear2010 · 20/02/2020 13:31

I'm a beautician and no you should not have sex for 24 hours after a wax. Its because it can introduce infection/bacteria into the open hair follicles. Its not just bikini waxing its the same with any area you touch after waxing. Even your eyebrows. Ever notice small bumps a day or so after having your brows waxed? Tha'ts the reason. No creams, lotions, tanning solutions, gym, swimming, sunbathing/sunbeds, tight clothing/friction. Its only 24 hours ladies and its for your own good.

Also NEVER let someone perform your wax if they double dip. Someone once described it to me as wearing someone else's worn underwear. Its stomach turning. I don't care what salons tell you about the heat from the wax killing the bacteria etc etc etc. Find somewhere else who puts your health first. Wax spatulas are £1.50 for 500! Cheap as chips so no excuse!
