Bleached hair help!

Hi all. I’ve got longish hair that about 2 years ago I had 3 sets of full head foils and then after that root bleaches and toner every six weeks. The last time I had it done was 8 weeks ago. Although I like the colour, I can’t afford to get it done every 6 weeks anymore! I’d really like to put just a blonde box dye over it to take it down from platinum to a blonde to a light blonde. Can I do this? Or will it go orange/green?!

My natural colour is very dark blonde.

Can you let the roots grow out a bit them switch to balayage rather than foils, so it looks much more natural if it starts growing out?

Then you'd only have to have it dyed every 4 months or so.

Thank you for replying trixie! Problem is DH hates it so I would like to put a box dye over it! Xx

Why does DH hate it?

More importantly, what do YOU want? Do you like it blonde? Don't worry about what DH thinks, he can do what he likes with his own hair. Grin

Tbh I wouldn't risk a box job if you're sure you want to completely change colour, if it goes green or brassy you'd have to get it fixed by a hairdresser anyway. Best to get it done properly by a professional. I know it's only hair but it's important to have what you want and have it done well, you have to wear it every day!

I've done something similar recently. I have always had my hair dyed in the salon either balayage or foils. I can't afford to keep it up anymore.

I put a box dye on it when my roots came through (John frieda precision light blonde). It looked good all over and I was happy with the result. Although it came up blonder on the bleached part of my hair it did blend in okay.
Second time I did it the roots went quite brassy Blush but calmed down after a few washes with purple shampoo.
Box dyed again last week as roots were coming in, medium blonde this time, it went quite orange, not the look I was going for!!! It looked bad for a few days until I managed to sort it with a blue toner shampoo to neutralise the orange. It looks okay now but nowhere near as good as salon results.

Over the years I've had my dark blonde hair every colour going. It is blonde box dyes and overly regular highlights that have in the past wrecked it.

What I did to find a long term solution (in similar to your situation but I was worried about the condition as it was all breaking off rather than just the cost) was to box dye it back to my own colour. I let it grow for ages until the damage was well grown out and had balayage done.

Now it only needs doing twice a year and even 6" of regrowth looks fine so is much more sustainable in terms of condition and costs.

It's not a quick fix and I'm no expert but I wouldn't recommend putting bleach on top of bleach yourself if you want to keep it long.

cherryblossomgin · 18/02/2020 10:20

If you want to do it yourself go to Sally's and buy professional grade. It's about the same price of box dye. If you want to darken your blonde you are probably better using a toner with a low developer. If your hair has been lightened, box dye will probably cause breakage.

Philip kingsley elasticiser, only I put it out on dry rather than wet hair! Really makes my hair feel less dry.

yogo · 18/02/2020 10:48

I put a box dye over mine a couple of years ago and have done ever since.

Looks the same as when I paid £££ at the hairdressers

Parahebe · 18/02/2020 11:14

My hair is mousy light brown, I used to have blonde highlights at the hairdresser but I have short hair so it was always being cut out and redone - expensive. So for years now I have done my own highlights at home with box bleach (actually my OH does it). It's fine, never any hint of orange/green! I use Jerome Russell maximum blonding.

I then use purple shampoo for a few weeks afterwards.

Sorry replied to wrong thread.

Princessfaffalot · 19/02/2020 07:02

Ah ok, sounds like I need to either grow it out or keep up with the bleaching then!

I do really care what dh thinks, sad isn’t it! He’s just always encouraged me to be as blonde

Why don't you have the hairdresser get it to the colour you wish then maintain with a box dye, for three or four months, then back to the hairdresser, then box dye for three or four months, and keep going like that?
