Buzz cuts

Does anyone have one? Has anyone had one? I keep seeing videos of women getting them on YouTube and they all look stunning afterwards! I currently have a pixie cut but am badly tempted.

My one reservation is that I don't wear makeup and all the women I've seen seem to balance their buzz cut with very heavy makeup. I guess to add some "femininity" back in? I'm quite petite, about 5'2" and size 10, white, and my clothes are mostly loose and breastfeeding friendly. I'm definitely not super stylish or "edgy" looking, I just think the buzzed look is really cool - any chance I can pull it off?

How fast does your hair grow? If you had it how long would it take to grow it to a length you are comfortable with?

I can’t help I’m afraid- my head is like a pea so I need BIG hair and short cuts take a long time for me to grow out. But what have you got to lose?

Gibbonsgibbonsgibbons · 15/02/2020 21:58

Grin reading this thinking - yeah this is the feminism board... cut your hair anyway you like

FloralBunting · 15/02/2020 21:59

Lololololol.

I get a grade 1 pretty high up, but it's not buzzed all over. Laughing my socks off at this in FWR, though. Feminist haircuts ftwGrin

Haha I know, why do I even feel the need to canvass opinions on this? Curse you female socialisation haha.

It grows pretty fast, would probs be back to the length it is now within a year.

I was posting from the app and as soon as I hit post I saw that it was set to FWR and I died a bit inside but it was too late. All my cred - (do I have any cred?) - gone forever haha.

My SIL has a buzz cut, she shaved it all off when MIL was diagnosed with cancer.

She looks great, she’s not a makeup wearer at all. Her only issue is the colour, she’s now very grey!

I tried once in the 90s and the salon refused! Wasn't brave enough for clippers.

I thought I was being accused of something with that thread title Grin

Cred= doubled tonight

SpeedofaSloth · 15/02/2020 22:09

It wouldn't take long to grow back to pixie length Smile

MingeofDeath · 15/02/2020 22:09

I shaved my bonce a couple of years ago during that really hot summer we had. It felt absolutely fantastic and was very low maintenance, it was something I had wanted to do for years and finally plucked up the courage to do it. I probably will do it again when the weather gets warmer.
Like you OP, I am small and don't wear make up, go for it, if you don't like it you an grow it out.

ByGrabtharsHammerWhatASavings · 15/02/2020 22:12

Hahaha Buzz. Maybe "cut" will be the new "cancelled"

OP posts:
SanFranBear · 15/02/2020 22:13

I've done it - although Grade 3 rather than Grade 1, and it felt great. Grew back a bit weird though. I now have a half and half with a grade 1 one kne side which then blends into a bob type thing as you go round.

If you've already got a pixie cut, I bet you'll look fabulous! Don't let the patriarchy tell you how to wear your hair Wink

My sister gave me a number one all over in her kitchen circa early 2000s after a bad home bleach job. I quite liked it but must’ve been accidentally signalling something because I was hit on by lots of women that year (something I had not experienced before or since)!

Do it if you fancy it, it’s liberating to do and makes swimming/gym very easy. Cold in winter tho so I would wait at least a month!

ByGrabtharsHammerWhatASavings · 15/02/2020 22:15

Thanks for the encouragement, I knew I spent all my time on FWR for a reason!

I’ve got a Grade 2 on the sides & the top cut as short as they could get it with scissors. I love the look and the convenience - who needs hairbrushes? And I haven’t touched makeup since I was at university.

RUSU92 · 15/02/2020 22:16

I buzzed mine once, had a bad hair day and it seemed like the answer!
Not totally bald but clipper short all over. But I was young and reasonably slim at that point, so I think I got away with it more than I would now.

I will say, I got quite a few sympathetic looks from people who must have assumed I had been through chemo, especially other women with buzzcuts who clearly had! Sad and also I had forgotten that I was getting married in 3 months Blush so my in wedding photos I still have veeeery short hair!

I love having short hair and its so easy to care for. If I were several stone lighter and my DP wouldn't object quite so strongly I would do it in a heartbeat!

Dulang. U pulled 💪

EmpressLangClegInChair · 15/02/2020 22:19

I tried once in the 90s and the salon refused!

The first time I asked for it my hair was nearly down to my shoulders and there was a lot of “Are you sure?”

Now they just nod & pick up the clippers.

ByGrabtharsHammerWhatASavings · 15/02/2020 22:35

I used to have very long hair and it took me ages to convince the hairdresser to take it to pixie length. It's also very curly so I think they thought it was going to double in volume at that length (which it kind of did).

OP posts:
FloralBunting · 15/02/2020 22:56

When I was a teen and had it short, the hairdressers would always do this tedious wispy business round the ears and neck,no matter how much I explained that I didn't need it made 'feminine'. I'm quite an angular sort, with decent cheekbones, and I think they felt I needed to be softened.

After doing that whole barking cult nonsense, and having it long for about 15 years, having it short again was a revelation. I do have a couple of inches on top, which I play with doing messy sticky up stuff, or sometimes do a dapper side swept thing, but I have it buzzed up to the crown and the lack of fuss, and the freedom that gives me is epic. It's also great and easy to play with colour when it's very short.
I do have to have it cut every 3-4 weeks to keep it tidy, though
