Are we all ruining our skin with our so called skin care ?

I’ve had time on my hands today and ended up idly reading up on skincare ingredients. I always use a cleanser , moisturiser sometimes a serum but without really knowing what’s in them . So I looked into the ingredients ( I know I’m late to the party !)
At first I read about how vitamin c , hyaluronic acid , vitamin A etc etc are good for your skin. Then I got a bit bored and googled ‘ is vitamin c actually bad for your skin ?’ And did it For all the things that were supposedly good . By the end of it I didn’t want to put much of it on my face and it got me thinking that we might all be doing more harm than good with all these products .
I know uv protection is important but still , I mean , I’ve seen many men ( and some women ) who wash and go with fine looking skin .
What do you think ?

One of the problems is that people don’t really research useful / and or active products.
I read the most crazy routines on here (sometimes) and then the poster is concerned about their skin!

I used to use soap and water once a day and spf only if it was really hot. I wore minimal make up. I ate healthily, exercised, slept and drank water. My skin was awful, wrinkled, congested, dull, breakouts, dry, rough etc.
Started reading Caroline Hirons and my routine is.
Am, hot cloth cleanse with a flannel with SD vit e or radiance cleanser or my cheapo asda cleanser.
Cheap toner
Cheap serum
Day cream with spf 15-30 on face and neck
Pm
Double hot cloth cleanser
Active toner
Serum
Then either a night cream or face oil

I go easy on everything.
I now don’t need foundation my skin glows, it is incredibly soft. I really enjoy the routine, it takes no time, I use cheap products and I find it really nice self care. My skin has been transformed by chemicals basically.

I would be worried about using lots of things. I panic about mixing stuff on my skin! I don't wear foundation or anything so I just use soap with hot and cold water then nivea or play at night and morn.
