Buying glasses online

The leg on my glasses snapped last night, and the optician told me today they can’t be repaired - v annoying! I wear lenses most days, so just need glasses for knocking about at home really, but want something that I could wear outside without looking horrendous if I needed to.

My budget is fairly tight, because my DP was made redundant just before Christmas - typical awful timing for an unexpected expense - but because my prescription is quite high (about -5 in each eye) the lenses tend to be expensive. I don’t want to spend more than £100.

My broken glasses were cool cats’ eye ones in tortoiseshell. Any great sites I should investigate? I do have an old pair to tide me over.

Are you long or short sighted?
I had eye surgery 10 years ago so I now only need reading glasses. Couple of quid from Amazon suits me.
If you are short sighted I guess that you’d need a proper prescription before just ordering. Can you confirm your prescription and then order online?

I’m short sighted, and usually need to pay to have the lenses thinned down because my prescription is high. I am actually due a sight test this month so will get a prescription there, but my optician is an expensive independent one.

I always buy glasses online though my prescription is -3 so not as strong as yours. I’ve used Glasses Direct several times with no problems

Another vote for Glasses Direct - they used to send out several pairs of your choice from the website for free & then try at home and only then buy the ones you want to keep. (ExH used to order from there so not sure they still do this).

Selectspecs are also good. Have also used glasses direct and speccyfoureyes ( superdrug)
Take a look at your own glasses and you should find the size on the arm/ leg (mine are 52 . 15 . 135)
Choose glasses with similar dimensions and they should fit and suit you.
The only drawback really is that there's no aftercare, so you cannot go in to your optician to get the fit adjusted.

Proper store, to try before you buy, take your new prescription there.

Lenses and frames for £45 all in, they will do the thinner lenses, varifocals and tint (if you need them) as part of the price.

They are great.

I use spex4less and they can be pretty cheap as long as you don't get seduced by designer frames. Very quick!!

I've bought from Glasses Direct on the recommendation of DP. I wear contacts so use glasses at the beginning and end of the day only. I'm pleased with the ones I got - I do two lots of free trials, you can try up to four pairs each time. I had to adjust the arms of the glasses I bought, but it was easy using hot water and gently bending them to stop them slipping down my nose. They always have offers on. I got two pairs with thinned lenses, one pair is prescription sunglasses.

I used goggles4u. You have to add your prescription and they sent the glasses in the post. Never spent more than £15! I just choose a similar style to what I had when I got them from the opticians as you obviously can’t try them on. Never had any problems.

Sorry to jump on your thread OP but I've been looking in to online glasses sites, I have my prescription but I'm unsure how to get the pupil measurements right. Do I just take a ruler and measure like that?

I have actually used Glasses Direct before, but they properly screwed up my prescription last time and sent me glasses I couldn't see out of, which although it was sorted out has put me off them a wee bit. (No idea how it happened, but they had filled them with a long sight prescription instead of short!) I might take another look, as I had previously bought glasses from them with no issues.

fluffy mine was on my prescription from the optician, but you can actually send your old glasses in, and they can figure the PD measurement out from those. (Assuming you have a spare pair.)
