Help! Dress Related! (Picture included)

Hello all, I need help. I have a very high profile event to attend in the future.
Think corporate/legal/black tie/evening gown....

I usually avoid these events like the plague but this one I simply cannot get out of.

I have trawled and trawled the internet and stores in person, trying to find a dress and I'm at a loss. Out of all the dresses I have tried on, there is one that I like in terms of the cut, design and colour; but it shows too much cleavage in my opinion. I'm posting a picture of me wearing the dress, it really is too much boob isn't it?

Can anyone please help with something similar but less booby.
The dress(es) must be full length, have a sleeve and not entail me flashing my boobs!

For context I am 40 this year, mum to 3 DC and in a very serious career so I want to look professional and smart but not like a 'mum' and not like I've made zero effort but equally not like I'm falling out of my clothes trying to land a Judge!

Help! Sad

How tall are you? If you are petite then taking the dress up at the shoulders might be possible to reduce visible boobage, I've had to do that before. Easier with a sleeveless dress though.

Disfordarkchocolate · 02/02/2020 15:51

How about this? They don't do many full-length dresses but this is beautiful. Great customer service too if something isn't quite what you need.

Hi OP. It was me who asked about your heritage (being the same, and I totally understand why that may be the cause of why you don’t feel comfortable in the original dress).

I think the most important thing for you considering your circumstances recently is finding something that you feel totally comfortable wearing and gives you a confidence boost without taking you so far out of your comfort zone (especially as this is a work related function where you will need to look professional).

I think it may be worth booking a personal shopping session at John Lewis or similar so you can explain your requirements and they can do the leg work and pick out some outfits for you. Do you have a friend, colleague or relative who could come with you for honest feedback? It can be bewildering going into a store when you don’t actually know what you’re looking for and can actually be counterproductive and leave you frustrated.

Good luck - keep us all posted!

Stunning. Not too much boob at all. If I looked like you I’d buy that dress and never take it off.

You have a lovely figure, the envy of many. For a social event, I think that dress would be lovely so long as you feel confident in it, so that your shoulders are back and you do not find yourself slouching your shoulders forward defensively.

Given that it is a professional event, in an area where you are established as highly competent, I would not be providing such a glimpse of my cleavage.

I would be looking for a high necked dress with a low back if you wanted to be more party party. A quick google for high necked long evening dress Uk found a good many (not necessarily to find a dress but to throw up some suitable brands and/or shops

Personal shopper at John Lewis might be a way forward, too.

The other possibility would be to try sewing up the 'v' and filling in with net in the same colour as the dress.

Simple for a dressmaker, but likely to look amateurish if you try to diy.

All the very best, have a lovely time. You are likely to have other events to attend so it may be worth investing in a knockout dress that you tan wear again and again.

That Ghost dress is gorgeous.

Lily193 · 02/02/2020 17:07

You look gorgeous in that dress but feeling comfortable is key. Why not find a good dressmaker and ask them to make a similar dress with a slightly less plunging neckline in a fabric you love. They could potentially also add some subtle embellishment which could be easily removed.

cathyandclare · 03/02/2020 09:13

You look gorgeous, but if it makes you fee self-conscious you may feel more comfortable in the Ghost dressed linked which is also glamorous but more covered up.

puds11 · 03/02/2020 09:17

I don’t understand. I can’t see a pic Confused

AnneKipanki · 03/02/2020 09:18

You are not alone . I can't see a pic either @puds11 .

MrsMozartMkII · 03/02/2020 09:19

I was just coming on to say I can't see the initial picture, which is a pity as I expect to be attending similar ilk events and am picking up ideas.

DaanSaaf · 03/02/2020 09:20

No pic for me either. Strangely eager to see op's boobs Grin

puds11 · 03/02/2020 09:23

Oh good! I thought maybe I was being spectacularly dim Grin

Sexnotgender · 03/02/2020 09:26

No picture for me either. Either on app or website.

flowery · 03/02/2020 09:40

Picture has gone for me, was there before. Maybe OP has asked for it to be removed.

AlexaAmbidextra · 03/02/2020 10:06

I can’t see it either. ☹️

PhoneLock · 03/02/2020 10:12

It was there yesterday but the OP has probably asked for it to be taken down.

See this thread...

For the record, she looked lovely in the dress.

DM1209 · 03/02/2020 10:34

Hello all, I asked to have the picture removed, as has been mentioned, due to a colleague and some issues. But I'm still on the hunt, have taken on all of the feedback and if I don't find anything else then the original dress will be 'the' dress. Thank you again. You were all really helpful. Smile
