Hair dye reaction/PPD Free Hair dye

I had a mild dye reaction about 4 yrs ago (tingle/burning sensation) then no further reactions for about 3.5 years. Had another mild reaction and now hair dresser won’t touch it unless I get written consent from GP.

So WWYD? Go to a GP? I feel like me going to a GP and possible dermatologist with such a ridiculous reason seems wrong

I was thinking of getting a home PPD free dye but could do with a recommendation? I have dark hair.

Ohhh following because this is what I need, I have a pretty bad reaction so wouldn't use a hairdresser as feel it's not fair to them.

Only PPD free dyes I've found online are very plain colours and do t look like they'd do much to my mid brown hair. I really love bold reds, and I can only find a mahogany.

Unfortunately there is no ppd free hair dye, don't be fooled by ' herbal' ones they just have lower levels. Pure henna can work but a total faff. Some salons use goldwell elumen which is a new system for colouring hair. Also there are Facebook pages for ppd sufferers with advice ect.. it's a bloody annoying allergy. I'm now too gray for goldwell (covers 70 %) so just going gray.

It's definitely not ridiculous to go the GO. I had highlights and lowlights for twenty years before I started to get a reaction and spent almost a (very miserable) year trying to work out what it was before a derm referral and extensive patch tests. Turns out I react to PPD, balsam of peru, abitol and something else I can't remember 😳

My skin has been so much better since j stopped highlights but sadly my hair is now white grey. Bleach doesn't seem to cause me a reaction so I can have the lightening - my hairdresser just can't seem to find anything for the darker golden blonde. We've tried a Wella one but it washed out very quickly.

Tried henna total faff and bloody horrible to use. Had to grate a block of the stuff, mush it in warm water to a paste, slather this mud on my head and cover with a carrier bag, then leave it on overnight. Washing it out took a good 5 rinses and it really did smell like mud. Finished product wasn't worth the effort.

@thereplycamefromanchorage is the colour change strong, saw that website and they described it as a translucent colour so was a bit unsure if it would show?

I thought hair dye always tingled / itched?

Torys, I have light brown hair, maybe 20% grey, and I find it pretty effective. In fact, I can get quite a dark effect, so normally use quite a light colour. You have to follow the instructions in terms of washing your hair with shampoo only first, and I leave on for an hour. It's pretty effective.

Josh Wood hair dyes are PPD free. They come up very dark btw.

As a fellow sufferer I tried a few different options, henna being one of them if you're after red or brown tones. You don't have to buy the lush blocks, if you buy powder you'll save yourself some work. It's still a faff but doesn't ruin your hair like regular dye, quite the opposite. Semi permanent dyes shouldn't usually contain ppd, they wash off quickly though and stain everything :/ .... and you still might be allergic to some other ingredients in them! It's a tough one, I'm currently trying to decide between continuing to henna or growing out my natural hair.

Sorry smurf but semi permanents defo do contain ppd.

Asterisk- some semi do not, such as manic panic or arctic fox, but they are fashion colours and wash out much quicker than say l'oreal casting (which has ppd).

Ok doak, yes a lot of the fashion ones ok, I used them for a while but couldn't keep it up as gray regrowth too quick.

I’m attempting Josh Wood. Doing the patch test and stressing! Never done any of this myself and it’s sending my anxiety through the roof.

I am suffering with hair loss and didn't realise that PPD could cause it,
I found an article online only yesterday about hairloss and PPD was mentioned
I used the loreal roots one and i am now wondering if this was the cause
I have been seeing a dermatologist for the last few months and recently had a scalp biopsy, i have not got the results yet, but i am hoping that it is caused by something other than that
I was told at first that my hair would grow back if it was Telogen Effluviam, but it has gone on for so long i don't think it will
I have used Loreal nice and easy for years with no bad effects,but the root stuff has something different in it
Trust Pilot has lots of bad reviews about loreal /hair loss etc

Princess that's really interesting as im Convinced it was the root touch up that triggered my ppd allergy!! I'd Been dying my hair for years until I used that one

I have also had allergic reactions so now have foils and a very patient hairdresser who knows not to go too close to the roots ! Hair 10-15% grey.

I developed a reaction about a week after I read a story in the local paper about a woman dying of anaphylaxis from a hair product. Haven't touched the stuff since as too terrified. 90% grey

I have also used Daniel Field
It is very dark so go lighter but very gentle

But make sure you do a patch test because you could be allergic to these to dyes and cause serious reactions
