Ditching hairdressers for home dye?

I used to home dye my hair when I was younger whenever I fancied a change. But I started going grey a few years ago and felt covering them would be best left to a professional. I’ve got naturally mousey brown hair with a hint of red and a lot of grey through my parting. I currently get a full head of mixed hi and lowlights twice a year and a half head every 8 weeks or so. But I’m sick of the expense and the time stuck in the salon when I’ve got 2 young kids and a hectic schedule.

Has anyone got any advice for switching to home dye with my hair as it is at the moment? I’m thinking of just going for a permanent cover grey type in a warm golden brown....

I am very grey now and tend to visit the hairdresser for an all over dye about once every 6 months. I maintain it myself at home by doing it monthly. Everyone comments on how lovely it looks.

I switched to home box dye a few years ago as I was disappointed by the result, cost and time of salon colouring. I use Olia and I think I do it better than a salon and for £7. I then use the remainder of the conditioner as a shaving cream. I think box dyes have a bad rep as they used to be really drying and smell awful back in the day. They have moved on so much now, less messy, better smell, non drying and lovely coverage and colours.

I always did my hair myself years ago and used to get compliments on it, I only stopped because a bad neck /shoulder makes it very hard for me to do myself. The only thing I would say is that if you do an all over colour and have grey that you want to cover this may be more maintenance (depending on the colour) as your roots may be more noticeable than with highlights. You could always just ask for a T section of highlights every 8 weeks or so which is along parting and around face which would be cheaper and take less time. Some salons push you to have a half head done when you don't really need it.
