Am I being oversensitive??

So I posted a status on my WhatsApp last night about not allowing anyone to define your beauty and your heart being the most beautiful feature you can carry (See attached to post) and my ex that I’ve been in touch with for many years and whom I’m still friendly with basically replied to it and said ‘Does that mean you are taking out your extensions then!’? I’d put a note on the bottom of the quote saying keeping it real and he responded with that comment.

I was really offended as he obviously didn’t understand the quote but he’s basically saying I’m not real as I wear hair extensions??

I told him I was offended and he said he was joking. I’m just hurt that he would immediately think of this about me coming to his mind about me not being ‘real’ just because I wear hair extensions??

Thoughts please (and yes I shouldn’t care what anyone thinks let alone a guy or an ex), however welcome your thoughts on whether you’d also be peeved?

Thanks ladies.

oh and he’s called me twice after and I haven’t picked up the phone as I just don’t know whether I have a right to be upset or not?

You’re being over sensitive. It was a joke. I’d have laughed it off.

Gemma2019 · 19/01/2020 18:41

To be honest I would have smiled, stuck a laughing emoji on his comment and thought no more about it. He was just joking.

Sunsetandmoonlight · 19/01/2020 18:42

It’s a bit cheeky and unnecessary but you could laugh it off.

RubaiyatOfAnyone · 19/01/2020 18:43

To be honest OP, i can see his point. If you are going to repost trite quotations about not caring about physical beauty, it is going to seem a little disingenuous when you provably do care.

That said, your ex didn’t need to say anything at all and chose to be unkind by publicly pointing that out. He probably thought you’d take it more as banter, but it’s obviously hurt you and i’m sorry.

PurpleDaisies · 19/01/2020 18:43

It was a joke.

ruby2020 · 19/01/2020 18:50

Tbh I think the whole posting "inspirational" quotes on your WhatsApp status is the most cringey part of this. It's so tweeny.

skiptheskip · 19/01/2020 18:57

Is this the same man you post about a lot, because quite frankly this fella can't fart without you looking for the deep meaning behind it.

He read your inspirational quote, rolled his eyes and threw out some flippant comment.

Seriously just block the guy.

SetTheScene · 19/01/2020 19:04

But... and it's not often I say this, but... he's right though isn't he?

You can't preach this so-called 'inspirational' clap-trap about being real, while adorning fakery.

I mean, I couldn't give a shit about anyone embellishing themselves with things that make them feel better. If you like hair extensions and they make you feel good, go for it. But don't then tell people to be 'real' while not being totally real yourself.

sheryl77 · 19/01/2020 19:08

No it wasn’t the same guy.

The quote was about YOU defining your own beauty, no one else and your heart being the most precious thing. So I think a lot of posters also misread the quote but ok thanks for your feedback!

Pipandmum · 19/01/2020 19:14

I read it twice.
His response is still just a joke!

ruby2020 · 19/01/2020 19:20

Regardless of your intention OP, it's still cringey af to be posting quotes when you're presumably NOT an emo teenager.

Scarsthelot · 19/01/2020 19:26

It's odd to put something like that on what's app

I think he was referring to your 'keeping real' comment at the end. You talk about keeping it real, yet wear extensions, which are fake. That was his joke was about

I wear extensions, I would have laughed

Runningonempty84 · 19/01/2020 19:57

Your update was cringey. Don't blame him for taking the piss tbh - esp as what he says seems to have an element of truth.

MoltonSilver · 19/01/2020 21:22

You're oversensitive.

MoltonSilver · 19/01/2020 21:23

You left yourself wide open for having the piss taken.
