Box hair dye...please please help me find a nice rich brown!

Hi,

I'd like to re-dye my hair, but every time I use a box one it ends up reddish instead of a nice rich brown.

Can anyone please recommend a shade and brand that's truly rich brown, not reddish please? I can't afford to make a mistake because I don't have a lot of money spare.

I use John Frieda lightest cool almond brown. This comes up darker than you think (but mid brown, not really dark). But I think to stay away from red/orangey tones you really need a cool shade - and this one is, for me. It is more expensive than some box dyes but if it does work for you, then it is regularly on offer

I also use a light brown one from John Frieda - it's one of the few that doesn't come up red. Just used the mid brow one and that one is red
