It really gets to me! Come 4pm ish I’m wanting to wash my hair again. Any solutions, of the diet/ shampoo etc variety?

If you are prone to oily and itchy scalp do you think you may have seborrheic dermatitis? A ketoconazole shampoo is good if you do.

Nottobesniffedat · 16/01/2020 17:44

Sympathies OP. Mine is the same, greasy rats tails since I can remember. I've bypassed the Batiste and just shake the baby powder straight onto it over the bath - sometimes I look like an extra out of Dangerous Liaisons.

I've been using TRESemmé shampoo (big black bottle) which seems to be the best I've found. Trying hotter water in the shower to try dissolve the grease although I think I heard that it can stimulate grease production more.

It seems to be worse in the wind or if I wear a hat. Tying it up keeps it put then hairspray to the front. If I don't have to see other humans, I just wash it, towel dry and don't put a brush through it, keep it as a nest - that'll teach it.

AceOfShades · 16/01/2020 17:52

You're washing g it too often.
This is going to be hard for you but try it!
Wash it. Put dry shampoo in it after blow drying. If you can afford it use living proof dry shampoo. (Well worth it and nothing like batiste etc. )
Then don't wash it the next day! Put dry shampoo in again and wash it the next morning. Do this for 2 weeks then....... you can go to 3 days. Honestly It works. I wash my hair twice a week.
The trick is dry shampoo, a decent one & just a little, the day you wash it.

AlwaysThinkingOfNames · 16/01/2020 17:52

Using a bar shampoo rater than a bottle has changed my life. I now only need to wash it twice a week

smemorata · 16/01/2020 17:55

Mine too OP. However, I got this in the sale and it has really helped

www.stories.com/en_eur/beauty/hair/shampoo/product.fullness-shampoo-black.0645341001.html

(I guess the fact that it is the sale probably means it is being discontinued though!)

crimsonlake · 16/01/2020 17:58

I have always had fine greasy hair and very dry skin believe it or not. I am now hurtling towards 60 and there is no let up.
I do not wash it everyday, copious amounts of dry shampoo and wash about twice a week. After years of dry shampoo it does concern me about the amount of its spray I might have inhaled.
I have tried all the remedies over the years and nothing has ever worked. I have shelves of shampoos which I rotate through.

DontCallMeShitley · 16/01/2020 17:59

Vinegar as a final rinse (in water)?

GenevaMaybe · 16/01/2020 21:55

Mousse! It has transformed my hair

Rachelfromfriends1 · 16/01/2020 21:56

Do you wash it every day? I have fine hair and this happens if I wash it every day too.

showmethegin · 16/01/2020 22:18

Buy seanik, solid shampoo from lush. My hair was like yours and now is clean, and I mean CLEAN for two days. I'll never use anything ever again!

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 16/01/2020 22:21

Actually mousse is a good idea,I've recently gone back to using that, first time since the 80s!

FleurNancy · 16/01/2020 23:18

Fine hair here too and I've had to train myself to wash mine only twice a week. I make my own dry shampoo out of cornflour, essential oil and a bit of cocoa powder (my roots are dark) and that gets me the extra 2/3 days. Washing it every day made the ends horribly dry and the roots greasy, lovely!

ACautionaryTale · 16/01/2020 23:20

Me too! Fine hair once described as him fluff.

I’ve just learnt to accept it / I’m in my 40s which may make it easier to accept

ACautionaryTale · 16/01/2020 23:21

I wash twice a day - before bed and in the morning

No amount of leaving it and washing less helps - I’ve tried it all

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 16/01/2020 23:24

I also have this problem. Fine hair/oily skin

It does my head in

I also feel like I've tried everything

Saladd0dger · 16/01/2020 23:31

I also have thin fine greasy hair but have dry scalp and skin. Dries me mad

Cocomobile · 16/01/2020 23:32

Same here; oily fine hair, oily skin. Also have a sensitive scalp and skin.

I don’t feel anything makes a difference. It’s hormonal. When I can be bothered I make my own dry shampoo (can’t use bought stuff due to allergies) and try to get an extra day. Don’t like going any longer than that as my scalp starts to get itchy.

I’ve been using an aveda shampoo with no problems thankfully. Still need to wash daily. I’ve figured out which ingredient I’m allergic to in shampoo through trial and error.

Imo people that improve after changing shampoo had issues with either having product build up or just not washing thoroughly enough, rather than a hormonal issue with true oily hair.

PickAChew · 16/01/2020 23:50

Mine has improved from changing to a milder, sulphate free shampoo. Mine is a scalp problem, though. It's gone from needing to wash every 36 hours to stretching to 48 hours or more. I'm still getting scalp flakes through the winter, though, same as my legs get scaly if I don't scrub them. That seems to be a central heating thing.

I don't have the fine, oily hair - I have coarse hair and sticky, smelly scalp to contend with. DH does have fine, oily hair, though, and has realised that his is less oily if he does condition. The same seems to hold true for DS2 who has inherited his hair.

Northernsoullover · 16/01/2020 23:59

I have fine hair that greases quickly..I've experimented with not washing frequently. Result? Really greasy hair Confused. I've tried everything. The only thing that makes it better unsurprisingly is washing it.

Notanotheruser111 · 17/01/2020 00:08

I’ve got the same hair, tried bar shampoos no sulphates, heaps of different brands. It’s still the same. I did have some success with an egg wash which is literally washing your hair with an egg. But it’s a pain in the arse to do and I’ve gotten out of the habit.

It’s hormonal, I also have increased hair fall which is worse if I leave it unwashed

ahagwearsapointySantahat · 17/01/2020 00:17

My recommendation, as someone who also used to have permanently-lank hair (and it is still straight and fine and still needs washing every day, but no longer looks greasy):

For the itchy scalp, try Nizoral (ketoconazone shampoo) - you may need it twice a week at first but should then be able to drop to once a week or less, meaning you can use whatever shampoo you like in between. However - I also find it leaves my hair very nice and shiny/not greasy (I use my regular conditioner afterwards) and doesn't stink like some treatment shampoos either, so I don't mind using it at all when I do!

Then for the rest of the time, do some experimenting to see what works well for you. I still find some shampoos leave my hair sort of sticky and lank after a few days' use (some seem to put a sort of coating on hair), but others are great. Some that I've got on well with include L'Oreal anti-breakage one (though the one I mostly use is now hard to find in the UK), or lately I've been trying Ethique shampoo and conditioner bars - Sweet and Spicy or Pinkalicious shampoos with Wonderbar conditioner worked well. Try each for a few days running, as it can take a while for the stickiness to build up with the bad ones, and see what works best.

Finally as someone above said, give all your brushes and combs a good clean every so often - I use my usual shampoo to get any greasiness out of them. Hope that helps!

ShadowsInTheDarkness · 17/01/2020 00:21

Mine was like this until I started dying it. The dye I reckon dries it out, and it's definitely less greasy. As soon as my roots start showing through I'll get grease at the roots and need to start washing more so it's definitely the dye that's making a difference. Probably a bit of a drastic solution though so may not be much help but if you're truly desperate could be worth a shot?

Gooseysgirl · 17/01/2020 00:28

I also use Nizarol and find it great. I've got a flaky scalp and greasy hair.

PantyGiraffe · 17/01/2020 06:34

I’ve tried not washing it but honestly, by the next morning it looks like someone has emptied half a bottle of olive oil on my head. I literally tried to get rid of it without washing one morning and it took most of a can of dry shampoo. And it itched a lot.

Thanks for the reminder re nizoral for the itching.

I feel your pain re the wind @Nottobesniffedat

This was my hair and now I can get it to go three days. It took some training, the only way to train your hair to last longer is to wash it less. There were some days in the beginning of the process where it looked bad! I made sure nights out fell on washing days, and if it was really bad on the other days, dry shampoo and a bun.

On the first day I wash and blow dry it with lots of volume, wear it down but make sure I touch it as little as possible, this took a lot of practice as I constantly want to play with my hair. When I get in in the evening, I spritz it with dry shampoo, clip it up on top of my head and leave it like that overnight.
The next morning, dry shampoo, brush, straighten if needed, wear it down again. Dry shampoo, clip it up overnight again.
Day 3 it's dry shampoo and a messy quiffy bun.
