Best work trousers!

Hi all

I need comfortable but smart black trousers for work. Keep making the mistake of buying nice stretchy black jeans type trousers. At first they're nice and black but after a few washes they start looking more and more like, well, jeans..

I'm interesting in recommendations.. I'd rather not go all the way to suit style trousers if that makes sense, but is there something in between. I'm increasingly apple shaped unfortunately so something that's comfortable and flattering around the stomach area would be perfect. Thank you!!

I wear black pull on M&S (I think Limited Collection)
Jet black, straight leg , wash'n' dry quickly , don't fade .

I wear an NHS tunic' and slacks combo , it doesn't need to flatter but needs to be smart (We have to buy our own trousers)

Watching with interest OP, this is the holy grail for me. In spring I'd love a pair of ankle grazing, black cigarette trousers (think that's what they're called) to wear with a pretty blouse and ballet flats. You wouldn't think they'd be so difficult to find Confused

ZaraW · 16/01/2020 12:17

I get mine from COS. I have slim legged wool trousers which are great quality but are dry clean. J Crew also have a good selection.

Minormiracle · 16/01/2020 12:27

Those sound ideal @70isaLimitNotaTarget. I can't seem to find them on the website though, I bet they've gone out of stock or something unhelpful like that!

Can't really have dry clean only unfortunately as when I walk in from work my DC seem to immediately start pouring glasses of milk over me / wiping chocolate hands on my trousers Hmm

I had some lovely Fatface skinny black jeans but these have now faded and no longer look very professional.

Sounds like what you need are Dylon black dye pods really, to refresh the ones you have and like - but that aside, I like the Boden (Hampshire?) ponte trousers. Good weight and very smart.

Hollyhead · 16/01/2020 14:17

Watching with interest but interested in pear shape recommendations!

Minormiracle · 16/01/2020 18:03

I've ordered some of that dye as a starting point (great idea!) but still keen for more trouser recommendations!

I love Boden's Hampshire 7/8 trousers. They're a very thick slightly stretchy fabric which means they don't crease and sit beautifully. I hate work trousers which crease around the crotch area so these are perfect. I have them in 2 colours and they sell in tons of others.

SunshineOutdoors · 16/01/2020 19:29

I have a pair of h and m fitted trousers, slightly short to show off the ankle (cigarette trousers as mentioned before?), even though I feel they must be rubbish and I should get a better quality pair I can’t find any that compare.

TheCanterburyWhales · 16/01/2020 20:19

Boden Hampshires and Richmonds are both great for work.
I have just discovered however that Calzedonia (I'm in Italy but I've seen them in the UK) do the most amazing trousers (duh, I thought they only did tights)
Both M&S and Next did good cigarette trousers last summer but I can't see them now on their websites, and I've seen Warehouse cigarettes praised on here

NotMeNoNo · 16/01/2020 20:24

Gap bi-stretch skinny ankle pants are great and come in lots of different colours and fabrics. The ones I'm wearing look like grey suit fabric but are really stretchy and comfortable.

gromberry · 16/01/2020 20:28

I have some slim leg ankle grazing ones from Zara that I love Smile

homemadecommunistrussia · 16/01/2020 20:32

I re-dye my black jeans regularly and inbetween I use these

AllTheCakes · 16/01/2020 21:00

I used to love Banana Republic’s Sloan trousers. They were one of the only shops that stocked petite in a decent work trouser. They’re now online only so I tend to go to H&M instead; their work trousers are much cheaper but not as quite as good.

Pajamagirl · 16/01/2020 21:06

Cigarette style in Dorothy Perkins loads colours about £20 and wash great . For basic work pants these are great .

BestZebbie · 16/01/2020 21:17

I usually wear jeans, but I recommend the "pleated crepe" trousers (come in black, blue and dark red) from The Stock Shop as incredibly comfy and also smart enough for work. They have an elasticated waistband and come up huge - buy at least one size down, one and a half down will be fine too if you are between sizes.

Minormiracle · 17/01/2020 22:39

Thank you so much for these fantastic tips. Some great options to start trying!!

Not a shop I would normally use but bought these after MN recommendation
www.romanoriginals.co.uk/stretch-bengaline-trouser-18001508
They wash well, don’t fade or crease and always get compliments

Oblomov20 · 18/01/2020 09:18

I need these!
Checking links now.

Oblomov20 · 18/01/2020 09:19

Nope. Sorry. Too much treggings. I want proper work trousers.

Elouera · 18/01/2020 09:35

I'm very surprised by the suggestion of cigarette trousers- tapered in and above the ankle!

Surely this makes the legs look shorter, and being a pear shape, makes the top half of the leg look even bigger in comparison to a skinnier ankle section? I've always seen on style type shows and online that a boot cut helps to balance the leg out. I would also think trousers finishing at the shoe add length and elongate the leg, rather than them finishing higher up?

MustardScreams · 18/01/2020 09:40

Was coming on to recommend the Dorothy’s Perkins cigarette trousers. I’ve got them in navy and had them for at least a year and they still look new.

Pajamagirl · 18/01/2020 10:22

I’m not a pear I’m an apple so cig pants work for me . Not sure fir a pear op said she is an apple .
( there were bizarre sentences to write )
