Dianette pill - Initial breakouts??

Hey,

My doctor has put me on the pill Dianette to help with hormonal hair loss and oily skin. I’m just coming to the end of my second pack and while it’s definitely helping with both the oily skin and hair shedding I’ve started to breakout in spots on my face. Not huge spots, just whiteheads. I’ve read about an initial breakout when you first start a new pill and wonder if I should persevere and see if the spots clear up? First pack my skin was clear, it was the start of the second pack the spotty skin started...

The first time I was on dianette I didn’t break out. My GP took me off it and I had to go back on as my skin started to get bad again. The second time around I had an horrific bout of acne with huge cysts all over my face. Took about 6 months to go and then it cleared it up lovely again. My GP wouldn’t keep me on dianette and changed my pill. It works for the most part but I still get the odd hormonal spot

@cloud1183 - so the first time you didn’t have an initial breakout but the second time you did? Is that right? If so maybe I should give it more time...

I think drs like you to give new pills 6 months to settle. My gp says they don’t really know how hormones work anyway.

Jesus are they still prescribing that stuff?! It made me seriously suicidal. When I spoke out to friends afterwards I learned a few others had been close to having breakdowns, one smashed up her house etc all on Dianette, it is seriously strong stuff.

Fluffycloudland77 · 16/01/2020 18:59

It’s also the only prescription anti androgen licensed for women. Spirolactones not licensed for it so only a consultant can prescribe off licence.

I was on it for about 5-6 years but it gave me migraines so I’m contraindicated for all combined pills now.

@Fluffycloudland77 - yes I’m thinking I need to give it more time to settle down. It’s just frustrating it’s helping one thing but causing another! Hopefully temporary though! X

@VulcanRay - Yes still prescribing it... I did ask my doctor and she said only Dianette has the hormone combination that helps with hair shedding excessively x

@Fluffycloudland77 - I did ask about Yasmin but she said that wouldn’t be effective and I was on Marvelon when the shedding started so that’s no good obviously either...

I was prescribed Dianette at age 15 for acne (I'm now 42) and had quite the opposite to an initial breakout, my skin cleared up within 2 months and I stayed on it until about age 23 and my skin remained flawless.

When I tried to get it again about age 27/28 my gp refused and said it wasn't prescribed for skin complaints any more.

For me it was a wonder drug!
