Your cruelty-free perfume suggestions please

For ages now, I've been using an M&S perfume that I really liked, but due to their changing room policies and encouragement of male fetishist reviews for lingerie on their website, I am no longer shopping there.

My perfume has just run out and I need to find an alternative. Can you recommend one which is light (but doesn't fade away quickly), probably floral but not sickly sweet, definitely not musky, and "smells expensive!"? In case it is relevant, I am 39.

It is really important to me that it is cruelty-free. I used to love L'heure Magique by Laura Mercier, but they are no longer reliably cruelty-free so I won't buy it.

Any suggestions? Thanks.

Jo Malone Wild Bluebell and Marc Jacobs Daisy

TheNavigator · 13/01/2020 10:12

Jo Malone and Marc Jacobs are NOT cruelty-free. Marc Jacobs Fragrances is owned by Coty and Jo Malone is owned by Estée Lauder, both companies that tests on animals.

Shay and Blue is 100% Cruelty Free and produces some lovely perfumes - well worth checking out.

cloud1183 Thanks for suggesting some, but I do want them to be cruelty-free.

TheNavigator Thanks for this info. I haven't heard of Shay and Blue but will have a look.

I think the new jo Malone range which is not part of "Jo Malone" the company - Jo Loves is not tested on animals. Prices are about the same but I'm not sure how you can test the scent as it does not seem to be in any shops.

OP, I don't know if your issue with the elevation of gender identity over sex extends only to, as you put it, "changing room policies and encouragement of male fetishist reviews for lingerie", but you may be interested to know that Shay and Blue support Mermaids. They have a special fragrance (not one of the ones you ordered) and donate profits from it to them.

No advice about perfume because it gives me a headache!

FFS! Do I care about the "transing" of children? Pushing Encouraging them down an irreversible pathway of medical and surgical mutilation, when 80-90% will have acepted their biological sex anyway after puberty?

Hell yes I care! Thanks for the heads-up flourella

Off to see if I can cancel order.....

More suggestions welcome!

I use Body shop white musk because I’ve not found anything not tested on animals perfume wise. Someone recently mentioned a company called Eden from Brighton that makes perfumes similar to big names but cruelty free. I’m yet to investigate- plan to once my bottle runs out.

littlecabbage · 13/01/2020 12:20

Thank you, I'll look into these.

Try Floral Street, Stella McCartney, and Clean Beauty Collective. The Stella ones you'll find in Boots, John Lewis etc for sniffing, but the others you might want to order samples online if you fancy them.

flourella · 13/01/2020 13:48

littlecabbage you're welcome, but it's all a bit shit, isn't it? A perfume company taking a stance on animal testing and responsible sourcing of ingredients is one thing, but why a customer should have to consider their own stance on transing children while deciding which flowers they want to smell like is beyond me!

littlecabbage · 13/01/2020 13:59

Thanks Judy, that’s useful, particularly being able to smell the Stella M ones in Boots.

Am considering ordering a set of samples from Floral Street also, having perused their website.

Yes flourella, it’s incredibly tedious, but I feel so strongly that Mermaids is complicit in lobbying for child abuse, that I cannot support their company. So glad you told me before I fell in love with one of their perfumes!
