Hair breaking round hairline - feel like crying!

QueenOfOversharing · 11/01/2020 17:55

I know - sounds dramatic, but my hair has broken in chunks at my middle parting and round my face at hairline. It looks awful! I'm paranoid more is going to break & I don't know what to do!

It's bleached with toner over it, which I know makes it weaker, but I've had it like this for months & months and never had this happen.

I use Kerastase & Shu Uemura hair products, masks & I don't use straighteners. I don't blow dry it that often either.

Any suggestions? Anyone had this happen out of the blue?

arixo · 12/01/2020 00:01

QueenOfOversharing · 12/01/2020 05:15

@arixo it's horrible, isn't it?? 😭

OP, I take forcapil hair supplements, they really do work (lots of new hair)- I really swear by them and recommended them to a lot of people and they helped. Never never never sleep with your hair down (tie it up in a VERY loose bun). Get yourself a silk pillowcase (helps with breakage too). Can you stop bleaching? (this contributed a lot, I bet).

readingismycardio · 12/01/2020 05:22

And if you ever brush your hair while wet - stop it.

Russell19 · 12/01/2020 10:54

I have this issue. Mine hasn't broken but its postpartum regrowth after originally losing it. Pfffft! All around my hair line, it looks awful. I have a hair appointment on Thursday and was going to ask some advice. I'll let you know. Obviously more about the regrowth than your original problem.

QueenOfTheSavages · 12/01/2020 10:57

Until you figure out what's going on with your hair, there's a product called Redken Anti-snap, which really helped my hair after I went from black to red to platinum blonde in a really short time. My hair was at the chewing gum stage when I washed it. It really stopped it from breaking so much. I hope you get it sorted.

QueenOfOversharing · 12/01/2020 12:01

@readingismycardio I don't tie it up, I wear a silk turban thingy at night. And don't brush when wet either.

@Russell19 I feel for you. Hope they can offer some advice. Seeing my hairdresser Tuesday to get Olaplex treatment.

@QueenOfTheSavages I've got that too! Been using it after I noticed first breakage - not sure if it's stopped any. Hairdresser recommended it ages ago - she swears by it.

I have had horrendous hair breakage and then a long period of no growth on one side only.

I started taking biotin tablets daily and 10ml of feroglobin and my hair has recovered massively.

It took a good two or three months for it to improve but it now looks and feels healthy with very little breakage.

Hope this helps as I was distraught when my hair was at its worst and my mood was so low.

QueenOfOversharing · 13/01/2020 00:00

@frogsjump I'm so glad yours is getting better. I tried biotin (not for this, but when it was thinning & doc was doing tests) and I got really bad acne breakouts. Didn't put it together til someone on a FB group said they had the same.

Oh god this is me too ! I’m 53 and still peri menopause. Also have had very low ferritin currently treated with iron. I think mine was connected to some cheap blond highlights a couple of years ago as it’s all in an area where most of them were but even though they’re well gone the hair there is dry and coarse despite conditioning and hair masks. Last few months I’ve really made an effort to eat my five a day, drink loads of water etc skin’s great but my fringe is still pitiful and tufty (although the rest has grown and looks ok) Confused someone recommended a lee Stafford hair growth shampoo/ conditioner also a kerastace root strengthener so may well invest in those. It really is soul destroying isn’t it Sad

QueenOfOversharing · 13/01/2020 09:15

@Katharinblum it's shit, isn't it? I was on verge of tears & ive been putting off washing my hair, but got to do it today.

I think we're very similarly going through this stuff - perimenopause and low iron. Wonder if it's the combo??

Queen i can totally empathise, but if your hair is coming out at the roots,it is nothing to do with what you put on your hair that would just cause breakage
I have been suffering with bad hairloss for the last 12-18 months, but i didn't relise how bad it was at the back, i have a large patch of hairloss from the crown down, seen a dermatologist who luckily is connected to my GP practice, he has put mine down to stress, but when i put on HRT more just fell out, floating out actually in front of my eyes
Even more is coming out at the parting now
I am having a scalp biopsy next week,
Are you stressed or on any hormone treatment .the pill etc? I have had all tests which came back normal
I hope you can get some answers
I tried that roots stuff, didn't help
Also Biotin folic acid D3.you name it, no difference
The hair i still have did grow very fast on biotin, but no difference to the hair i have lost
The dermatologist says mine is Telogen Effluvium, and will grow back, but nothing yet ,which is why i am having the biopsy,to see if there is also another cause
Good luck. hope you can get some answers, maybe request to see a dermotologist

princessTiasmum · 13/01/2020 17:42

Meant to sat the derm, said most of the hair loss cures are just money makers and dont work, permenantly and said "don't waste your money"

QueenOfOversharing · 13/01/2020 19:45

@princessTiasmum mine is both breaking & falling out. I'm on hrt. I siting you see GP now.

What did the GP suggest @QueenOfOversharing

QueenOfOversharing · 14/01/2020 00:21

@OhWellThatsJustGreat tbh a completely useless appt. He doesn't think I should re-do blood tests yet as tested early November & said as thyroid markers not outwith normal ranges, this would take longer to show if they do become an issue. He said that these symptoms could be from 3 different areas - thyroid (1st thought); oestrogen (I'm perimenopausal, but having a lot of fluctuations indicating my levels are changing a lot); or iron.

His suggestion is to wait a month then re-test all bloods. And he said don't waste any money on stuff that offers a solution, as this is due to one of these things, not anything external.

I do understand his reasoning, and he also spoke to me about my antidepressants & was the most helpful in terms of suggesting less common alternatives. He had told me to find out who the psychiatrist is overseeing my MH input & to "demand" a meds review with him. If not forthcoming, tell him & he will write directly - he will support the two options of meds too.

So, I don't feel he was fobbing me off, rather not wanting to test now & be disappointed at not seeing any changes as thyroid typically will change over months. And one of my thyroid results isn't where you would expect (low instead of high).

QueenOfOversharing · 14/01/2020 00:22

Just realised I started off saying completely useless then ended saying it wasn't!! 😂 It wasn't useless - it just wasn't a quick fix. I am impatient!!!!

Nat6999 · 14/01/2020 00:31

Get your thyroid checked, it may take tests every couple of months for up to a year for your doctor to decide if it is underactive, if you have your hair bleached or tinted, try to get a hairdresser that uses Olaplex or Wellaplex or similar products that mix with the colour to protect your hair plus an after colour treatment & products to take home for aftercare. My hair is bleached to as near white ash blonde as I can get it which requires basically cooking the hair as I am naturally mid to dark brown, by using Olaplex with the bleach, my hair feels fantastic, no breakage or frizzy fried ends, it isn't cheap but is worth using as it saves me having to have broken ends trimmed off every 6 weeks. It can be used with any chemical process or as a stand alone treatment.
