Will a manicure/nail varnish last two weeks?

I'm going on a once-in-a-lifetime family holiday to the Caribbean later this year.
I'd like to have my nails done, for the first time ever, but really don't know what my options are - ideally I'd like to just have a really tough, hard-wearing coloured nail varnish on my own nails that will last the whole two weeks without chipping. Is that possible? What should I be searching for when I look for someone to do it?
We'll be doing a lot of swimming, snorkelling etc, so it would need to be pretty tough.
Thanks

I have not encountered a normal polish that would last for 2 weeks of swimming. You want shellac/gel.

itcamefrombeckyvardysaccount · 07/01/2020 15:36

Yep you want a shellac manicure.

It will last two weeks and need to be soaked off. Don't pick it off you will damage your Neil underneath.

Janaih · 07/01/2020 15:37

You want gel polish from a nail bar.

OvalCanvas · 07/01/2020 15:37

I'd suggest gel polish too op. I can get 6/7 days out of a regular manicure at most , and that's after trying combinations of different products.

Pajamagirl · 07/01/2020 15:40

You need shellac
It will withstand all your holiday activities
Ordinary manicure , no chance

JasperAndFlo · 07/01/2020 15:42

And a shellac is on my own nails? But done by a professional?

Can I buy the nail varnish itself to take with me to fill in any chips?

Thanks again

A good pedicure with decent nail polish does work, i won't have gel etc on toes etc anymore. I have a gel effect topcoat which is fab and adds good protection try Seche Vive Gel Effect Top Coat

grombre · 07/01/2020 15:43

yes. on your own nails. you shouldn't get any chips unless you're unlucky. you can't do it yourself unless you buy a UV lamp to cure it.

JasperAndFlo · 07/01/2020 15:44

Brilliant. Thanks all!

As suggested by pps - get Gel nail polish put on by a proper nail technician - it paints on like 'normal' polish then is set under a uv lamp. It will then need to be removed properly (eg. go back to where you had it done for removal) regular polish remover wont take it off - don't pick them or you will damage your own nails. I get mine done regularly. fingers Lasts really well at least 3 weeks before regrowth makes them start to look a it scruffy. Toes last even longer!

XingMing · 07/01/2020 16:45

Regular polish would be fine on your toes but fingers need a gel manicure as PPs have said. Mine has been taken off today after three weeks and the colour/gloss was fine, but the regrowth was too much.

Tinyandpetite · 07/01/2020 18:22

I usually only get my nails done every 3 weeks with gel. Other than it been ‘grown’ out at the bottom, it looks perfect. Had my nails done today actually x

Yes a gel polish on natural nails last 3 weeks, as PP have said. You could always take a matching shade in a normal polish to do patch up if a disaster occurs does chip or come off. I like my OPI gel, but just get a cheapie to top up form Poundland if I'm going on hols.

Normal polish on toes.

itcamefrombeckyvardysaccount · 07/01/2020 19:06

Is gel and shellac the same?

Janaih · 07/01/2020 19:40

Shellac is a brand of gel polish. Not the best one imo. My local uses dnd

Ffsseriously · 07/01/2020 23:21

Shellac is a brand and is easier to remove than other gel brands, but it doesn't always last as long as other brands. Shellac is a hybrid I believe not pure gel while other brands are pure gel. Op make as ure you go to a beauty salon not a nail bar. Nail bars are quite rough on nails and are also often embroiled in modern slavery.

itcamefrombeckyvardysaccount · 09/01/2020 09:22

Right I see. My friend works from home and she uses cnd. It's never chipped when I've had it done.

I've had acrylics come flying off but the cnd seems indestructible.

violetbunny · 09/01/2020 12:50

I find dipping powder nails last longer than gel, if you can find somewhere that does it.

Drabarni · 09/01/2020 12:59

Yes, Rimmel and I did it myself before xmas, still fine.
Base coat, polish, another polish and topcoat, two top coat to be sure.

Cookiebear2010 · 09/01/2020 14:22

Being in water that much will effect your gel manicure so chips are possible. Also be careful of suncreams wash your hands after you apply as that will also effect your polish.

Ticklemeelmo · 11/01/2020 07:16

OPI gel manicures are the best, they just grow out rather than chipping, which I find other brands of gel do after around 2 weeks.
