Do you notice what other people wear on holiday?

Morning all

I'm on holiday in a week, yay, but i'm too fat for my spring/summer clothes, boo.

I have 5 outfits I can fit into. I'm away 8 days. 2 days will be travelling so I'll wear the same thing out and back. That leaves 4 outfits for 6 days, in 30 degree heat.

It's with a tour group so i'll be moving around, but with the same people all the time. Do you think they will notice if I don't change for dinner each night, or re-wear the same clothes (with a sink wash in between)? It's a suitcases-type holiday, not backpacking (which would make so few clothes normal).

I'm keen not to buy things I don't really want (money and environment), but I dont want to feel uncomfortable either. I would typically bring 10 outfits for a 7 day holiday.

I feel I really should go out and get some more clothes, but it really is a waste. I dont want to stay this big. It's thailand, so I hear clothes are cheap there, but at my size (large 16) i'm not going to fit into anything on offer.

Could you go and check through local charity shops?
In that heat I think a second change of clothes for the evening is probably much better as it’s very sticky / sweaty.

kjhkj · 07/01/2020 09:21

I think you could get away with it if you wear something in the evening and then wear it the next day. I wouldn't do it the other way around (day into evening) just because you'll be hot and sweaty in the day, particularly somewhere like Thailand.

kjhkj · 07/01/2020 09:21

But no, I don't notice at all what others are wearing

NightsOfCabiria · 07/01/2020 09:23

Ebay is your friend if you get them posted in time (not from China).

I’d go with separates in a limited number of colours (say, white, pale pink and grey) so then, you can mix and match.

Also try the sale rail in TKMaxx. You dont want to spend all your time washing.

LemonPrism · 07/01/2020 09:23

If they look really stunning then I notice, like model like or a gorgeous dress which hugs them perfectly.

Otherwise no, I don't tend to really look at peoples clothes. Unless I want to find where they're from and buy them myself

MarthasGinYard · 07/01/2020 09:26

2 days travelling and you are planning to wear the same 'out and back'

I'd certainly take some extra tops etc in that kind of heat and also another comfy change to travel back in.

Newfloorlamp · 07/01/2020 09:35

I'd buy a few inexpensive basics like harem trousers and vest tops to top up your wardrobe. They'll be good as loungewear when you're back so will get used until they're worn out

KittenVsBox · 07/01/2020 09:37

I wouldnt notice.
I would wear something out to dinner, then rewear the following day.
Typically not the other way round tho in a hot place.
Maybe consider 2 extra tops from the charity shop, and redonate when you get home?

violetbunny · 07/01/2020 09:37

In that kind of heat, I wouldn't be able to re-wear the same clothes I'd worn after a day of sightseeing. I was swelteringly hot most days in Thailand.
Could you invest in just a few versatile pieces (a couple of T-shirts and shorts)?

SecretNinja · 07/01/2020 09:51

Thanks all, looks like I will need to invest in a few extra things.

Not easy shopping for summer clothes at the moment, next to nothing in the shops (including charity shops), and I'm trying to reduce my carbon footprint so reluctant to online shop too much. But I will have to.

Anyone know where I can get a white t-shirt that isnt see-through? I've needed one for ages but havent had any luck finding one. That would be useful longer term.

I think I might take a couple of linen dresses ( the ubiquitous Next shift comes to mind) just for the evening. I assume as you’ve a suitcase there’s plenty of room. They’re very forgiving and easily taken in when you lose weight. I couldn’t bear to not have a few options with me. I’m afraid I do notice what people are wearing but I like people watching ( in other words I’m nosey)

MorrisZapp · 07/01/2020 10:15

I don't think it matters if others notice or not, but I do think you'd be hellish uncomfortable in clothes worn twice or washed in a sink.

Surely some cheap basics aren't hard to get in a 16. Do you live near shops?

SecretNinja · 07/01/2020 10:31

The shops are just full of winter stuff at the moment. Found some t-shirts in GAP, but they were all see-through.

Yes, I'll have a suitcase and lots of space to pack.

I was hoping washing things would remove any odour, and if no one would have noticed anyway, it might have been ok. But I had doubts, and some of you do too, so I'll keep looking.

All my own fault obviously, and I'm frustrated with myself.

Hey op, have an eBay hunt for out of season holiday clothes, I always find it's pretty good!

AnuvvaMuvva · 07/01/2020 10:38

I'd go to Primark and get a couple of men's shirts, loose and floaty (linen or cotton), some vest tops, and some harem/yoga trousers.

I got a lovely non-transparent white T-shirt from FatFace, but that was a few months ago.

caperplips · 07/01/2020 10:50

I think you need more clothes for that many days.
Look on line in the sales sections - often bargains to be found there especially at this time of year.

purplecorkheart · 07/01/2020 11:35

I wouldn't notice what you are wearing unless you were wearing a particularly nice top and then I would probably ask you where you got it.

I would bring some more clothes though. If it is very hot you might want to change a couple of times. When are you off? The spring summer stuff should be coming into shops soon. Ask some friends and family if you can borrow some stuff if you really don't want to buy.

DarkMutterings · 07/01/2020 11:53

Lots of good tips here, I think it's doable depending on what you've actually got. A good capsule wardrobe can be mixed up into lots of variants

Also think about
Get some dryer sheets to put in your suitcase, it will help freshen clothes when packed.
If you rinse wash, iron them afterwards that way they'll look tidier
If they are your thing take a couple of scarfs to add a bit of colour to plain tees at night, then re wear plain tee the next day

BinkySodPlop · 07/01/2020 12:13

I do quite a lot of touring holidays, and yes - I do think people would notice, and yes, I also think you'd be uncomfortable in that heat. See if you can get some Dylon travel wash - it's great and gets rid of a lot of sweat / bacteria etc at low temps.

If you have a Decathlon near you, have a look at their clothes - I've bought walking trousers and tops out of season at good prices. For evenings, I know it's online, but have a look at Lagenlook Clothing - natural fibres, one size, not hugely expensive. Can be worn when you've lost weight. Take cycle shorts to stop the dreaded chub-rub.

magicstar1 · 07/01/2020 12:21

Asos have loads of tee shirts etc. right now in their sale. I've ordered a few nice things this morning...a sun dress for £9 for example. I got a couple of white teeshirts from them recently for my holidays, and they're not transparent at all.

kjhkj · 07/01/2020 12:23

could you borrow couple of things from a friend. Far more environmentally friendly than buying cheap fashion for the sake of it.

candycane222 · 07/01/2020 12:23

I notice but I would be more likely judge people for having a different outfit every day, and would expect to see things again! In a hot climate a sink wash and 24 hour dry and/or hotel laundry service should be absolutely fine and I can't see why it would be uncomfortable? You will want fresh clothes in the evening but with maybe an extra top and maybe a scarf as pp suggested ( or buy one of the numerous pretty ones there) and you should be able to work a rotation fine!

candycane222 · 07/01/2020 12:25

I love lending peeps clothes for holidays for exactly the reason kjhkj says

Ihaveamind · 07/01/2020 12:25

You will definitely need daily fresh clothes for Thailand, possibly twice a day as it's very sticky.
Do you have time to order a few magic skirts?
They are a good material for heat and can be worn as wrap around with t-shirts/tops.
If you are avoiding buying new clothes because you think you will slim back into your spring/summer clothes they will also continue to fit at whatever size you are. So not environmentally unsound.
Have a great time!

mumtumdocare · 07/01/2020 12:33

Charity shops are where its at! I did this for my last holiday, bought a capsule wardrobe for £20. Better than throw away fashion if unsure if you'll get many more wears out of it when you return. I always feel like I pack too much but then am glad of the choice when I'm away. Sod's law dictates if you only take enough for X days, or plan on rewearing an item then that item will inevitably get a mark on it 🤣
Have a great holiday!
