Do you notice what other people wear on holiday?

Morning all

I'm on holiday in a week, yay, but i'm too fat for my spring/summer clothes, boo.

I have 5 outfits I can fit into. I'm away 8 days. 2 days will be travelling so I'll wear the same thing out and back. That leaves 4 outfits for 6 days, in 30 degree heat.

It's with a tour group so i'll be moving around, but with the same people all the time. Do you think they will notice if I don't change for dinner each night, or re-wear the same clothes (with a sink wash in between)? It's a suitcases-type holiday, not backpacking (which would make so few clothes normal).

I'm keen not to buy things I don't really want (money and environment), but I dont want to feel uncomfortable either. I would typically bring 10 outfits for a 7 day holiday.

I feel I really should go out and get some more clothes, but it really is a waste. I dont want to stay this big. It's thailand, so I hear clothes are cheap there, but at my size (large 16) i'm not going to fit into anything on offer.

I don't understand the question. If you are worried about hygiene/smelling, then the washing sorts it. Are you concerned about people thinking you are repeating an outfit? Who gives a shite?

Yes, I notice what people are wearing but I don't pass judgment on them if the outfit is repeated. Unless they are visibly dirty, smelly or very unkempt (I'm not that judgy but I'd notice for sure). I notice in a very idle fashion iyswim, I'm obv quite interested in clothes or I wouldn't hang around this board.

That said, I wouldn't plan to do laundry and be ok unless I knew the items would dry well, I'd rather pack something extra. Changing for dinner and then wearing those clothes the next day as a PP said is very workable as a plan

LifeInAHamsterWheel · 07/01/2020 13:01

This being the Style & Beauty board, I don't mind admitting that I like to look at what people are wearing (usually to get ideas, I'll often ask someone where their outfit is from!) so yes I would notice that you're re-wearing a lot of the same things. I don't think I'd judge you for that though, but I'd be worried that something might get so dirty that a sink wash or washing with travel detergent wouldn't get it properly clean again and then you're another item down. So I think you should increase the number of items you bring.

I appreciate you're conscious of the environment and not wanting to buy online etc but if you look at eBay there's lots of options and the clothes aren't new so you're recycling and helping a little bit!

Hope you have a lovely trip Smile

SecretNinja · 07/01/2020 13:11

Thanks everyone. I'm off next Monday so have a few days.

I will get dryer sheets and the recommended travel wash.

I guess I am feeling rather unconfident at my bigger size, plus worried about looking a bit unkempt, and people assuming I will smell because they recognise I've worn it before. I am sure a sink wash will help, but it wont be as good as a proper wash.

I hadnt thought of borrowing, but yes, thats an excellent idea. I'm not sure I know anyone large enough, but will have a think.

I dismissed ASOS as probably only having see-through t-shirts, so I'll give them a chance.

Havent heard of magic skirts, will look them up now. Yes, I hope not to stay this size any longer than I have to. My S/S stuff is a 12, which I usually am, but I've had a challenging year.

I've tried a few charity shops and can't find any with summer stuff in, but there are two I havent tried yet.

You are right, if I spill anything I'm sunk!

I'm not worried about the fashion police, just that people will notice and silently judge me. I'd feel uncomfortable about that.

I'll do the dinner into daytime thing. I hadnt thought of that.

Will need to get some extra bottoms though, as mosquitos like to feast on me I need full cover on my legs at night.

I will give ebay a go too. Best start right now so they can arrive in time.

Irrespective of what people thought, there is no way on earth that in that kind of heat I could get away with so few clothes, and a sink wash just doesnt cut it. They need a full on proper wash to get all the sweat and smells out. I have to take extra clothes whenever I go somewhere hot. (A large amount are identical tops so you'd never guess). Theres also the issue I always plan for, which as weird as it may sound, foes happen, something odd gets on your clothes, and doesnt wash off easily by hand. You cant wear the outfit reasonably again. Be it a drink spill, some food item, something in the street. I'm not clumsy but stuff happens.
The next website has a whole section on it marked sale. They might have stuff in there, you can have it delivered to your local store to pick up if it's easier. I've bought really cheap summer stuff there out of season.
Fat face and white stuff t shirts seem to be quite thick fabric from memory.

I’ve just come back from Thailand. It’s a myth that all the women are dainty little ‘Thai bride’ cliches. Although people tend to be shorter than the average Brit there are plenty of bigger built and curvy women. They also depend on the tourist trade for a lot of their income so these two things combined mean there will be plenty of stuff to fit you in normal shops and markets. I didn’t shop anywhere posh so can’t say what the size range is like those shops.

BringMeTea · 07/01/2020 13:28

Weather really depends where OP is going in Thailand. Quite cool in the north now for example. Andaman side is hot but not particularly sticky. Asos is a good shout or John Lewis for tees etc. I am jealous! Have fun.

AgathaX · 07/01/2020 13:35

Next online have plenty of summer stuff with next day delivery to stores for most of it.

BanKittenHeels · 07/01/2020 13:35

Depop is your friend.

BurningGubbins · 07/01/2020 13:36

You’ll definitely be able to find clothes in Thailand that will fit you if it comes to it. Thai fishermen’s trousers are all one size, loads of floaty dresses and skirts and there are plenty of loose tops.

theseaisbrightfromhere · 07/01/2020 13:36

M&S have basic t shirts for £3 in the sale - and even if you lose weight, t shirts are always fine when baggy, or you can wear them in bed

I'd get a few of those and some palazzo trousers, again if you get elasticated waist, they'll do when you're at a few different sizes.

IShitGlitter · 07/01/2020 13:41

I've been in my local charity shops this morning theres plenty of normal tshirts I think bottoms are easier to rewear but think you definitely need some fresh tops.

PineappleDanish · 07/01/2020 13:45

Only notice if they're wearing the same thing as me!

BringMeTea · 07/01/2020 13:47

Loads of white tees/tops on John Lewis online. Plenty on sale too.

DeadBod · 07/01/2020 13:53

I always notice what people are wearing but that said, I am a minimal packer and always rewear night time clothes.
For 6 days I would take - 3 pairs of shorts, 6 tops for day time wear and then 3 night time outfits which I would wear twice each.

oohnicevase · 07/01/2020 14:36

Have a look on Next clearance or they have summer stock available on line already . I expect Primark have some summer stock also .

oohnicevase · 07/01/2020 14:38

An example of next clearance.

And just another thought. Laundry in the Far East is very quick and cheap and they seem to manage to get things cleaner than I ever could - if that might be an option if you find yourself running out of things.

witherwings · 07/01/2020 15:02

Nope. I never notice what people wear unless it's particularly unusual e.g dressed up really glam and they are usually casual.
I would be a dreadful witness if I had to describe anyone after a crime.

GoodDogBellaBoo · 07/01/2020 15:05

If you are that worried about the environment that you don’t want to buy two extra tops or do online shopping, I don’t understand why you are flying long-haul to Thailand on a holiday?

It will be hot, and you will need to change at night. Buy a couple of thin blouses that wash and dry easily.

GoodDogBellaBoo · 07/01/2020 15:07

M&S relaxed t-shirts are cheap, £6 I think, and are really good. Slightly longer sleeves.

astralweaks · 07/01/2020 15:13

Don’t notice.

Caspianberg · 07/01/2020 15:25

I wouldn't notice what you are wearing in terms of style unless really extreme.

But same as others have said, its not enough clothing really for 10 days in a hot climate. Bottoms are fine usually, but on a potentially hot coach, in 30 degrees weather in and out, I would want 3 tops per day to change ie morning, afternoon and evening. As sweat and confined spaces isn't nice. You can get away with washing tops and underwear in sink properly with soap as they will dry, But 6 tops only would be cutting it a bit fine. Aim for 10 tops and 6 bottoms.

John lewis usually sell decent john lewis own brand plain t-shirts that aren't transparent.

XingMing · 07/01/2020 15:39

Use your hotel laundry service, and ask for express service. It's cheap
and good for everyday things, much better than trying to handwash. I would not send delicate items though. But in Thailand, you will want two changes of clothing daily, and two/three quick cool showers as well if you're anything like me.

SecretNinja · 07/01/2020 15:44

Thanks everyone! I will get more clothes, and depending on how much I like them, keep them for wearing at home, or donate them.

I'm desperate to see the world, so I cut back everywhere else I can to try to off-set it (been vegetarian my whole life, shop in-store to avoid deliveries, don't waste food etc...). I've let myself down with this whole weight thing.
