Chipping nail varnish

How do you get nail varnish to stay on nicely? After a few hours my nail varnish always starts to peel away and wear off especially at fingertips. This happens with all the different makes I have tried and different thicknesses of coat.

But I buy mine in Tesco. A manicure using this lasts at least a week with almost no chipping.
