Turning blonde/gold instead of grey?

I’m reaching the age where I would expect to see some changes as I get older (few fine lines, heavier jaw line, that sort of thing). I’ve been keeping a close eye on my hair as I’ve been expecting my first grey hair for a while now too. But for the past year or so my hair has been changing, but it’s turning blonder, it looks like I’ve had quite bright gold highlights. Has this happened to anyone else? I’ve always had naturally mid brown hair.

I'm 40 and my hair used to be dark brown. It's faded over the last 6 months or so to a mid/light brown. I don't seem to have any actual grey hairs yet though.
