Venturing away from jeans - help needed!

New year, new me etc etc... I’m well and truly stuck in a rut of jeans and a top with either boots or converse - it has become my uniform and I never wear anything else!

I’d really like to wear something different but not too different. I was thinking of a just above knee skirt with black tights and flat shoes. Does that sound ok? I’m not bothered about being the height of fashion just don’t want to look ridiculous (I know I will feel odd wearing something other than jeans anyway!).

I’m mid 30s, size 12-14. Any recommended shops (don’t have a huge budget)? Thanks!

You will just have to go to shops you like and try stuff on! Find out if you are a FatFace girl, or a Mint Velvet/seasalt/Boden/next or Baukjen sort of person

It sounds like you’re after quite a classic like OP. Black tights are everywhere, knee lengtt skirts might oddly be tricky at the moment since midis are having a moment. I often wear skirts with flat shoes and often find myself slightly disappointed with the look. Can’t quite figure out why it’s not working for me. Have you seen outfits like this on somebody and are hoping to emulate three? Tell us more about what sort of skirt you’re thinking of - tight, jersey, a-line, denim, full, wool...?

I’m not best placed to recommend shops though because I’m not in the UK.

I've been thinking same OP- I only ever wear jeans and jackets in work. And jeans and tops outside of work. I don't know how I got stuck in this rut I used to be so stylish.
I'm
I'm looking at dresses and boots looks... but my problem is I'm not happy with my tum and waist anymore (just turned 40) and I won't wear it if it's not flattering.

Agree with PP that will need to do a few shopping days out to find what works...

kittykatkitty · 02/01/2020 00:39

I did this in October
I bought 8 dresses,a biker jacket, ankle boots, trainers and brogues.
I wear a combination of these things most days.

flopsytheflatcat · 02/01/2020 08:11

I've done exactly the same as @kittykatkitty

Me too Grin

My new middle aged uniform Wink

Looks nice though

It’s nice to know I’m not alone! I think a shopping day where I just try different things on is needed.

Then being brave and actually wearing the new clothes - I’m so comfortable in, or rather so use to jeans and a top that going out in anything else feels very strange and I get very self conscious. And then go and put my jeans back on! Grin Anyone else felt like that? Do I just need to get on with it?! Smile

Yes, just get on with it!

GatoFofo · 02/01/2020 12:00

You have described me, I buy the other clothes but am too scared to wear them
as I think people will stare and comment. Maybe need to do it in stages?

CharitySchmarity · 02/01/2020 15:02

The shorter the skirt, the better they look with flats. Not suggesting you should wear a micro mini but just above the knee would give better proportions than on or just below imo.

theclockticksslowly · 02/01/2020 19:41

Yes I feel people will stare and comment too! Don’t know why, I doubt I’m that interesting! Grin I keep telling myself I couldn’t remember what someone else was wearing the day before so why should they remember what I was wearing (for the past decade!).
