What style/beauty trends defined the decade?

I thought this might be a fun NYE thread, especially for those of us who have children and are therefore housebound!

For me:

Beauty - highlighting/contouring, huge dark eyebrows, eyelash extensions, and lip fillers. Basically the whole InstaFace thing.

Style - midi dresses with trainers, mom jeans, chunky trainers, and pretty much everything we wore in 1996!

Anything else?

Trainers on nights out.
Contouring.
Balayage (or however you spell it)
Uggs?
Midi length floral dresses with black snakeskin ankle boots
Activewear

VioletCharlotte · 31/12/2019 20:59

Skinny jeans
Leggings
Cold shoulder tops (I really hope we leave these in this decade!)
Midi skirts
Wearing trainers with skirts and dresses
Biker jackets
Jeans cropped above the ankle
Eyebrows!
Contouring
Lip fillers
Eyelash extensions

@QueenOfTheAndals Just googled Kate Moss to see if she’s still wearing her skinnies and she’s been papped at least twice in them in the last couple of weeks Grin Although what other trousers really work with wellies or long boots?

On the other hand her teenage daughter was in boot cuts!

I also have to point out Kate’s amazing star print coat in the second picture Shock

Jumpsuits and playsuits

NannyPear · 31/12/2019 21:09

Venice oh yeah. I remember rocking flare jeans as a kid in the 90s/early 00s and the bottoms of them were always soaked!

QueenOfTheAndals · 31/12/2019 21:09

Skinnies tucked into knee-high boots was a big trend in the mid to late noughties. The last few years have been more about the rolled up jean with ankle boots though that might be over by now.

I think a lot of the things on here have only really been a thing the last few yrs. Dad trainers & thong swimwear weren't a thing in the early tens.

I think the overwhelming silhouette was very much skinny trousers, leggings, with smocks, tunics for the first few yrs. Leather leggings, Wedge trainers Isabel Marant style with skinnies. Raybans being super popular as a brand again. Chanel bags but worn by the Towie & Geordie Shore lot. Leather biker jackets & biker boots becoming staples. definitely a shift to larger body shapes & a bigger bum as more desirable but agree with another poster that it's even more unattainable now as you need a 6 pack. Plus sized models now famous eg Ashley Graham. Mid tens normcore & white trainers.

antlady · 31/12/2019 21:14

@VeniceBeach I love that star coat, I think its Gucci. Kate Moss is still the queen!

antlady · 31/12/2019 21:14

Oh yeah festival fashion/Coachella became much more mainstream & everywhere.

antlady · 31/12/2019 21:17

Major trends sports luxe & athleisurewear as in completely acceptable to wear joggers clubbing & gym leggings & top but not going to the gym.

Yesyesitsme · 31/12/2019 21:18

I definitely didn't have my first pair of skinny jeans until post-2010. The 90s were all about bootcuts, 501s and flares, then sometime in the noughties were straight leg jeans like TopShop Marthas, which I loved - hope they bring them back!

queenofarles · 31/12/2019 21:25

Oh yes festival flower crown how could I forget those !

Hygge? It’s still going strong.

Massive diamanté earrings , still fashionable too, but starting to look dated.

antlady · 31/12/2019 21:26

I can't see skinnies ever going away completely largely because the shoes/boots you wear under bootcuts are hidden. The shops have been full of 90s boots but i've not seen anyone wearing them.

VeniceBeach · 31/12/2019 21:29

For jewellery – hoops, both tiny and big, (again); chokers (again); layered necklaces; having loads of ear piercings with dainty earrings in the Maria Tash style. I think chunkier chains and rings are next.

HelloDulling · 31/12/2019 21:29

Skinnies are v 2003. I was a weekly magazine fashion editor in the 00s, I encouraged one and all to wear them, largely because Mossy did.

antlady · 31/12/2019 21:31

Ankle boots in general, Chloe Susanna's, I Marant Dicker boots, Acne Pistol boots & the thousands of high street dupes.

Can you tell I used to work in fashion! 😆

Moominfan · 31/12/2019 21:31

Milk maid
Puff sleeves
Man buns
Bralettes
Midi length
Fila trainers finally had their moment

instagramwilleatitself · 31/12/2019 21:34

@antlady Grin

I own no less than 3 pairs of Pistols including the knee high version. Believed they were a timeless boot. However I underestimated my fickleness as cannot deal with rounded toes now.

queenofarles · 31/12/2019 21:36

I think some of these styles will still go on,

I don’t think we will stop wearing skinnies, although I haven’t worn one in inverted a year!
They are very versatile for UK wet weather.

Blazers , sportwear separates worn with more tailored separates will still make it through.

antlady · 31/12/2019 21:37

stuff that's worn in mags & on celebs takes a while to filter down to the high street or at least it did. Topshop Baxter's did not become super popular until the late 00s & their skinny shapes were still the best selling styles by far as late as 2017

emilybrontescorsett · 31/12/2019 21:38

HD brows
Contouring
Highlighter
Lip fillers
Hair extensions
Maxi dresses
Floral dresses
Gladiator sandals
Piercings
Tattooes
Activewear
Men in flip flops shorts and beanie hats

QueenOfTheAndals · 31/12/2019 21:41

I live near a fairly trendy part of London where a lot of teens and early 20somethings congregate and the mom jean is still going strong with them. I'm yet to see anyone under 25 in bootcuts!

OP posts:
antlady · 31/12/2019 21:41

@instagramwilleatitself Lucky you! I have the Topshop knock offs. Tbf a western boot is still a thing so think they are classics. Have you moved onto squared?

And instagram has bloody eaten itself. I loved it in the early tens & was an early adopter as it offered something different to my beloved fashion magazines. Hate it now!!

QueenOfTheAndals · 31/12/2019 21:42

@antlady I think the ubiquitousness of IG has lead to the rise of the VSCO girl!

OP posts:
antlady · 31/12/2019 21:44

jewellery definitely all about the layered look, lots of pendants, stacking rings & bracelets. Rose gold became really popular.
