Hair styling for the inept

I recently got my hair cut like this. I love it. I'm going to a soiree tomorrow night (not actually, just a lovely gathering with friends) and I'd like to do something with my hair. Bearing in mind I don't own a hair straightener or curler and the most effort I put into my hair usually is a quick blow-dry, any suggestions?

Spend longer drying it and dry it in sections.

Tilt your head upside down to blast the root, this gives volume. Then section the top bit up and turn your brush under to smooth the hair follicles into place as it dries. Do this throughout by taking it a section at a time, blasting the hairdryer and pulling your brush in the direction you would like your hair to fall. For a short haircut like that you could use mousse or another styling product.
Tigi or swartzkopft are good brands. If you're going somewhere fancy a nice hair clip in one side might be nice.
