Is it brown eyeliner that l need?

I am approaching 40 at speed and beginning to wonder if black eyeliner is too harsh? Other people think switching to brown eyeliner helps as it is less stark. Will it make much of a difference?

I mostly stopped wearing eyeliner altogether a few years ago because I think it's ageing, full stop. (Just use eyebrow stuff and mascara, occasionally with neutral eyeshadow.)

However, sometimes to glam up my normal daytime makeup to go out, I add in eyeliner but only in grey (used to wear black). Grey is definitely very flattering.

Can anyone recommend a grey one? Ideally not in a pot - not a steady hand here!

I'm a big fan of Morphe eye pencils - they smudge beautifully, but also last well, and come in a ridiculous number of shades. I have this grey.

What colour is recommended for very dark brown eyes?

I'm 35 and I've never worn black eyeliner (except on stage). I've got hazel eyes and, on the rare occasion I bother, use gold, grey, plum, green. Very occasionally brown.
I've only ever used brown mascara too.

Mine are hazel and I find green looks great. Hadn't thought of grey or purple though so will try them too, great tips.

I have brown/hazel eyes and have been using a khaki/bronze eyeliner from Korres for the past few years which I really love. Has a little bit of a sparkle in it. Brown mascara better for me too, though surprisingly difficult to find.

I know it sounds really boring- but I use a nude eyeliner sometimes on my bottom eye and it makes my eyes pop and look bigger and brighter :D x

@orangina I use a really cheap one from Natural Collection at boots. It's only about £4 and the best mascara I've used. Although I think I ended up buying brown/black last time as I hadn't found brown for ages.

Thanks for the recommendation PorpentinaScamander... will look out for it! I love the Lancome Hypnoses mascara, but good to have an alternative....
