Hair loss when brushing.....

Hi All,

I’ve been going through a period of hairloss which I think might be finally easing up a bit... not sure if it is hormonal but I’ve been put on Yasmin birth control to see if it helps. Still have some hair come out when I brush in the morning & evening. Probably 10-12 hairs a time. Is this normal? I think I’ve been worrying about my hair for so long I’ve lost track of what is normal. The hairs are usually in my brush and some in the sink xx

I’d be interested to know what other people experience too. When I brush my hair I’d say a small handful comes out and I’ve recently started thinking this might be a bit extreme.

OP have you had your thyroid checked? That was one of the first symptoms for me (hypo) x

@ILoveWillSmith - Funnily enough that was my first thought as I’m also hypo and I’ve had hairloss in the past from that but no my bloods are almost perfect! I thought more hormonal will the suddenly oilier skin too xx

How often do you brush your hair @Everley?

@Sarahlouiseis33 Every morning & then before bed, possibly once more if it’s down and gone a bit tanged.

Normal. Average shed a day is 100 hairs, and remember it's an average so some people might lose closer to 200, some may lose just a few. I think as long as you don't see thinning and can see new hairs growing through then it's nothing to worry about

Doctors often say bloods are fine even when iron is low enough to result in hair loss. The range for 'normal' is quite wide. If you've recently had blood tests, I'd ask for the specific levels relating to iron.

That’s reassuring @mousemousse, thank you

I have had hairloss for the last year, seen a dermatologist who has put it down to stress, and could be partly to blame, but also hormonal, as was put on a new HRT and lots more fell out until i have now got bare patches,
Had lots of tests and all normal, sick and fed up with it, hair is generally thinning all over now
I feel your pain
