Talk to me about balayage...

I've had my hair a solid block of platinum white for years.

It looked fab as short styles but I'm now at long bob kind of length and it looks a bit shit.

I put different toners on which mixes things up a bit but I'm bored.

I was thinking of going for balayage with just the ends blonde (and toned different colours most likely).

It's quite a drastic change but I think it might mix things up a bit.

My questions are:

  • How often do you need it done/touched up at the hairdressers?
  • When you have it done/touched up, what does that mean? ATM I just have bleach slathered on the roots/all over followed by a toner but does balayage mean highlights too?
  • Has it had its day now?
  • If yes, what's next? What should I go for instead?

Thanks so much people!!

I love the look personally.

If you go for a shadow root you can go for longer between salon visits too.

Not wanting to sound unhelpful but it's probably best you go talk to a hairdresser, preferably one who specialises in this process as if it's not done properly, it's not a good look.

I used to go to a colourist who specialised in this and I've never heard of (or seen) balayage being done on a full head of tinted platinum blonde hair. It's also worth noting that balayage works best if you wear your hair wavy or curled. Balayage is less of an upkeep job than highlights.
