Red lipstick help

I never really wear lipstick, just a neutral coloured lipgloss. However I think I'd like to try a red lip for a night out at the weekend. My lips are always a bit dry, could anyone recommend a red lipstick that will be nice and dewy (I hate the current trend for matte lips!) Also, how do I figure out what will suit me?! Should I bring a few cotton buds with me and use them to put it on my lips? I'm not sure that putting it on my hand will really give me an idea of whether or not it will suit me. Or maybe I should scrap the whole idea and go with my usual lipgloss Confused

As it’s red lipstick your buying for the first time I’d go somewhere with a beauty counter and talk to one of the girls!

Red lipstick can either look lovely and sexy or just wrong so very wrong

Mac will sterilise each lipstick and let you try them on properly as well as provide makeup wipes to remove. They have a range of reds with different undertones so are a good option to try. Most reds are matte but I have one of theirs called cockney which isn’t and is lovely. I’m fair and cool toned skin if that’s helpful.

bellalou1234 · 10/12/2019 18:57

Mac cockney is a nice wearable red

Go for a blue based red not an orange base red ( as blue makes teeth look white - orange will give you yellow looking teeth )

purplecorkheart · 10/12/2019 19:17

What colour skin tone have you got? Warm or cold? A lot depends on that.

LifeInAHamsterWheel · 10/12/2019 19:17

Thanks. Not sure I'll get near a MAC counter in time, does anyone have a high street brand recommendation? And are they all generally matte finish?

Warm-ish skin tone. Fair haired but not ultra pale. I wear shade "warm ivory" in my No7 foundation day tnfay and a slightly darker (Lancôme) one for going out as I usually wear a bit of fake tan.

I use maybeline 24 hour link stuck in 039 plum .

666onmyhead · 10/12/2019 19:20

Haha should have proof read that !

MadisonAvenue · 10/12/2019 19:21

purplecorkheart beat me to it when asking about your skin tone. I'm warm toned and can't wear a lot of reds as they're blue-based.

In fact, as an aside, I find that lipsticks tend to be more suited to cool skin tones than warm so I have difficulty finding ones that suit me.

MadisonAvenue · 10/12/2019 19:25

Ah, I see you're warm toned. From Mac I like Dangerous, Lady Danger and Style Shocked, but all are matte which I see you're not keen on although Style Shocked is a Powder Kiss lipstick so while it's matte it's a very light finish.

LifeInAHamsterWheel · 10/12/2019 19:25

Thanks @MadisonAvenue that makes sense and maybe it's a bad idea for me to get one!! I'll have to get onto a Boots and see if I can try some on. Maybe a more red shade of gloss would be better?

@666onmyhead thank you so much! That "try it on" feature is brilliant! There were 2 red shades that actually looked ok 👍🏻

I was like you OP never wore red lipstick but I bought a set from Lipstick Queen which included Medieval and it is exactly what you are looking for - it is a wonderful red , dewy and long lasting and I highly recommend it!

I got a really nice one in the Body Shop the other day.

It looks scary in the tube but really flattering on.

PurpleDaisies · 10/12/2019 20:16

The one I have is Athens Anenome. It also lasted really well and wasn’t drying at all.

LifeInAHamsterWheel · 10/12/2019 20:19

Thanks everyone I'll go on the hunt tomorrow!

No7 do a colour matching lipstick service so if you’ve already been matched to one of their foundations they should be able to guide you to a suitable red shade.

I know you said you didn’t want a matte finish but just be aware any glossy or balmy finish in red may smear or bleed so a matt or satin finish (possibly with a lipliner) will look more ‘polished’ I think.

vaz119 · 10/12/2019 20:56

I have very dry lips. I bought a red lip liner from nyx which I used to fill in my lips. Then I blot with a tissue then I put balm over the top. So it's moisturising and not matte looking (which shows up all the dry bits)

EgremontRusset · 10/12/2019 21:00

If Warm Ivory is right for you then the coordinating lipsticks are on their website www.no7beauty.com/uk/foundation-matchcolor/warm-ivory/lipstick#show

LifeInAHamsterWheel · 10/12/2019 21:23

That's great @EgremontRusset I never knew that!
