Hair - highlights - patch test policy at salon

I want to get highlights done and the salon I want to go to has a policy that everyone has to get a patch test (they put a bit of the stuff on your arm to see if you get a reaction) if you haven't coloured your hair at that salon in the last 12 months. Fair enough, I'm glad they do this - people can develop allergies they didn't previously have and they can be very dangerous. I've been a bit Hmm at other salons that don't require any skin test at all.

However they say it needs to be between 5 days and 48 hours before your colour appointment. This seems like a very narrow window to me, and as I have a toddler would mean taking DC in on a weekday for the test in order to go to the appointment on a Saturday. Has anyone else come across this policy - that it can't be any more than 5 days beforehand?

They told me this on the phone but the website only says it needs to be at least 48 hours beforehand.

I am surprised for highlighting as it doesn’t touch your scalp. Are u sure you have to for that?

Yes, they have said it's for all colour and highlights. I think there is still a risk if you have an allergy tbh as it's right next to your skin so I'm glad they do offer the test.

As far as I’m aware, it can be more than 5 days beforehand? If their policy is that after 12 months since the last patch test they must do a patch test again, one could infer that the result from their test is good for 12 months? I last had a patch test in April and have had colour appointments every 2 months since.

With bleach I don’t think there is a patch test, but as you’ll probably have a toner put on afterwards you need a patch test for the colour.

That's a good point re the 12 months!
Yes I think they put colour/toner on, it's why I wanted to go there

It is a pain, but having seen someone after an allergy to hair dye, I would never skip it.

Just go the salon the weekend before if that’s what’s convenient, as long as it’s at least 48 hours before your appointment it should be fine.
