I'm going to have a new diamond ring made (solitaire) and need some advice on which of these is the most important. I'm looking at carat size of around 0.8 to 0.9.

Clarity ( of stone - small inclusions etc)
Colour of stone (white, good white, etc)
Cut ( good, platinum etc.)

There is a pretty big difference in price between the top and bottom end of all the above, so if you were to put them in order, is clarity more important than cut, or cut more than colour ( etc etc.)

If you had to compromise on ONE of the above and go for a lower grade, which one would it be?

Cut is really the key priority. An extremely well cut diamond of G/H/I (or even J) colour and VS2/SI1 will be a better looking diamond than a poorly cut but D/IF diamond.

A good cut can negate some colour as it will be much sparklier. Inclusions can impact sparkliness. VS2 - SI1 is fine to the naked eye. There isn’t much point paying for a high colour or clarity unless there’s a reason it’s very important to you.

If you are buying a certificated diamond, ask for its dimensions as you can use the online HCA calculator (google it) to assess how well cut it is.
